Vintage Silver Highlights - City of Roses, Portland Oregon Silver Trade Unit

Collection Highlights -

I have another very interesting vintage silver round. This round has a few things going for it. It is the silver trade unit with the very classic reverse side of the scale weighing out coins. This is the same identical reverse as many of the other silver trade units. It almost feels like they all use the same part of the die or Master casting.

The front of this coin is celebrating Portland Oregon or the city of roses. There's no date or mint mark that I can find, so I'm not sure if this was part of a series celebrating different states, or if it was locally produced with the thought that those in Portland might buy, or if it was a private run or someone ordered these to be made for a group.

It's a pretty good looking front of the silver trade unit. It has a nice depiction of some roses and a call out to Portland oregon. Portland Oregon be is known as the city of roses for more than 100 years. The city planted more than 10,000 bushes along Portland streets for people to come and see.

Well I certainly enjoy the fact that it celebrates both roses and it gives you the city it celebrating, the design is a little lacking. I don't know what it is because there's plenty of detail in the leaves and the vines and the roses, I just feel like it's missing something.

Reverse

How much comment about the reverse. We have seen this design so many times it is ubiquitous with the silver trade units. Really hoping for a mint mark or date or something to help identify this coin.

Some of these went off into drowns that don't appear to have any markings to help identify them or track them down a little bit frustrating. All of my search results only lead me to prior eBay sales which don't give me much information. I wish there was an easier way to research some of these I really miss SAC and some of the photos and information they had on their website. Maybe someday it'll get resurrected somehow.

Hopefully one of my peeps @silverd510 or @silversaver888 have this know a little bit more about it

I can’t find my book, or I would most likely have an answer for you. But my guess is it’s one of the Washington or Oregon mints. There were a bunch back in the 80’s.

Do you have one of those SAC books by Archie Kiddin? Been looking at those but the onnes for the older stuff is pretty rare it seems, wish they would print them again. !PIZZA

No those SAC books suck, they don’t have much information in them at all. The entire beginning of the book is about mints, but it’s about all the mints now a days. There really isn’t much vintage anything in those books.
I call mine a book. It’s more like a handmade book/pamphlet style thing. I forgot who on Steemit sent me the link to the guy who made it, but it is really good. All vintage, nothing after like 1988 in it.

Portland was the city of roses?

Cool round, I've not seen on before either. You're picking up some awesome stuff!

The Scales on the Silver Trade Units are a common feature on various different rounds minted by different mints as if this was coordinated at some level. IT's just too bad there is no unique identifying feature to reveal the original mint.
