Collection Highlights 1890-O Morgan Dollar - Father Side

I pulled out the coin collection books this evening to reassess where I am in a process and take a look at what I have. I decided to pull out this bad boy to show it and share some details in general.

This one I acquired when I bought out the collection of my grandparents on my father's side, it appears that they were a little bit of a silver bug as they held on to some coinage, and I actually bought out the collection of my grandma was still alive. She asked me about it and said that the collection had quite a bit of silver it was worth some good money, I think she was afraid I didn't know that the coins were made from Silver and had more than just numismatic value. It's nice to know that maybe I inherited some of my stackitis and I didn't happen to get it in the wild.

Let's take a look at some of the stats for the 1898 o Morgan dollar. There were over 10 million of them minted new orleans, but the best part is that these coins were minted at a 90% silver so you get .77 Oz of actual silver in each one. I think it's pretty sweet to have a coin with three quarters of an ounce of silver in each one. Just imagine if our money was still minted in silver.

Stats

  • Mint: New Orleans
  • Mintage: 10,701,000
  • Designer: George T Morgan
  • Composition: Silver
  • Fineness 0.9
  • ASW: .7734oz

  • Best Grade Guess AG03?
I know that this example is a very low grade. I use a very useful resource I have both the photo grade book, and the photograph website.
    Photo Grade

Using either of these really help me understand a relative grade that might going would probably receive if it were graded. As I scroll through the photos almost all the way to the left I think this coin might fall into the AG03. While it is in pretty rough shape I clearly think it is a step below the G04, and in my eyes has a chance to be a step above the fr02. It's pretty close and this coin clearly has a ton of where, but I can still read the date and the mint mark so I'm happy to be able to identify it and put it in the collection with a notation of where it came from

Obverse

Taking a look at the adverse, you can still see the outline of the face along with the majority of the wording. I'm missing a fair amount of stars in the lower right, and you can still make out Liberty in her headband. That's really about it in my mind for positive attributes. To be up a grade level I think you'd have to see almost all of the stars and the owner rim, and the grade level below loses most of the lettering.

Reverse

The reverse is very similar, it is missing a fair amount of the lower left hand letters in the upper right hand letters. The reverse is a little bit worse and where than the Obverse. To go up a grade level I think all the letters would still have to be clearly identifiable, while the grade level below loses almost all out of room warning. I think this falls within the ag03 category where most of the detail is lost but the mint mark and outlines can still be seen.

Happy to Have It

Well this coin is clearly a low grade example, for me it's more about where it came from and the family history for these coins. Many of the coins in the collections and coins set aside by my relatives will not be hydrate examples, but they weren't going collectors they were just regular people who held on to some coins, whether they were special, or they thought they were valuable it didn't matter but they put them in a safe and I was lucky enough to get them. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to someday get a high grade example of one of these coins in my collection but for now I'll be happy to have this one.

haha - I have been keeping my kids off all social media for now. Hard to explain why HIVE is better, but it clearly is. I have thought about having my oldest post is original art work but is doesnt draw consistent enough to justify the learning curve. !LUV

I think hive would be an exception since making some money is a lot more certain here

That looks a little worn down. Better just send it to me since it's likely not up to your discerning standards. 👍🚀🎉

Yes, you are lucky, and so is Kerris whose father left her coins! No one left me any coins, and learned about silver and gold only recently. You are lucky, @senstless !

I am blessed for sure. I hope my kids eventually get into it too. Sometimes if your parents are into it, you avoid it intentionally so who knows.
