Anyone else someti.es feel like they're starting too many different projects... and having loads of them un-finished?

You might have a "pattern-weaver" brain 😁

Part 1/11:

Embracing the Pattern Weaver Mind: Unlocking Your Creative Superpower

Have you ever glanced at the clock and been overwhelmed by the fleeting sense that there’s never enough time to explore all your interests? Perhaps your browser is filled with dozens of open tabs, each representing a different passion—ranging from ancient history documentaries and sourdough baking tutorials to the latest breakthroughs in AI. Your home might showcase evidence of a restless curiosity: half-started online courses, unassembled pottery kits, stacks of unread books on urban gardening. Yet, amid this vibrant collection of pursuits, a familiar voice of doubt whispers, “Why can’t I just focus on one thing?”

The Myth of the Jack of All Trades

Part 2/11:

This inner critic often pushes the idea that being interested in many things makes you a failure—a “jack of all trades” but “master of none.” Society venerates deep specialization: doctors, engineers, scientists who have spent decades mastering their narrow fields. But what if this perception is misguided? What if your scattered projects aren’t signs of weakness but evidence of a profound, underappreciated strength?

Introducing the Pattern Weaver

Part 3/11:

Imagine your brain as a loom—constantly weaving threads from various disciplines, experiences, and ideas into a unique tapestry. I call this cognitive style the Pattern Weaver. Unlike specialists who dig deep wells of knowledge in a single domain, Pattern Weavers walk the landscape, collecting diverse “threads”—bits of knowledge, skills, and insights from different fields. Their genius lies in synthesis: connecting seemingly unrelated dots to spark innovation.

The Power of Breadth and Connection

Part 4/11:

History and research back this up. Breakthrough ideas rarely emerge from within isolated silos. Think of Steve Jobs, who took a seemingly useless art class in calligraphy and later revolutionized computer typography by weaving its principles into the Macintosh. His ability to bridge art and engineering exemplifies the Pattern Weaver’s gift: transforming disparate threads into something transformative.

Visualize your collection of knowledge as threads in a tapestry. While a specialist’s focus results in a uniform, single-color fabric, a Pattern Weaver’s multicolored threads allow them to craft complex and vibrant designs—innovations that stand out because they draw from various sources.

The Modern Relevance of Pattern Weaving

Part 5/11:

In today’s rapidly changing world, adaptability is more critical than ever. Industries can be disrupted overnight, and those who rely solely on deep specialization are vulnerable. Pattern Weavers, with their broad toolkit, can pivot seamlessly, navigating chaos with agility. Moreover, as artificial intelligence advances, many deep, narrow tasks will be automated. But what AI cannot do—at least for now—is make creative leaps across disciplines. Human Pattern Weavers will become essential as connectors and synthesizers.

Addressing the Overlap with ADHD

Part 6/11:

A common question is whether this pattern-wandering tendency indicates a cognitive disorder like ADHD. While both involve tendencies toward shifting focus and intense curiosity, their underlying mechanisms differ. ADHD is characterized by challenges in executive functioning—impulse control, attention regulation—often experienced as being pulled away against one’s will. In contrast, Pattern Weavers experience these shifts as deliberate, curiosity-driven choices to connect new ideas.

Many individuals with ADHD find their brain’s wiring enhances their pattern-weaving abilities, especially when equipped with strategies for managing executive functions. Recognizing that their expansive curiosity is a strength can be transformative.

Part 7/11:

The narrative that emphasizes specialization has roots in industrial and information ages. But we now live in the Integration Age, where the ability to connect diverse ideas is invaluable. Pattern Weavers’ skills make them particularly suited for solving wicked problems: complex, interconnected challenges like climate change, inequality, and public health crises, which require systemic thinking across multiple domains.

Their broad, mosaic careers—combining biology, data science, and nonprofit work—is typical of how today’s most impactful solutions are created: through interdisciplinary, convergent paths.

Practical Strategies to Cultivate Your Pattern Weaving Power

Part 8/11:

Embracing your natural tendencies involves actionable steps. Here are three techniques to consciously develop and leverage your pattern-waving abilities:

1. The Idea Ledger

Create a system—digital or analog—to capture ideas, insights, and connections as they occur. Divide your notebook into two columns: Spark and Connection.

  • Spark: Note down what you’ve just learned or found interesting.

  • Connection: Jot how this idea relates to others or how it might be applied elsewhere.

This practice trains your brain to see links intentionally, fostering synthesis over mere accumulation.

2. Skillweaving Your Portfolio

Reframe your resume or self-presentation to emphasize interconnected skills rather than linear job titles.

Part 9/11:

  • Instead of “worked as a barista, project manager, freelancer,” tell your story as a problem solver crossing multiple domains.

  • Highlight how skills in one area—like customer service—enhanced your effectiveness elsewhere, such as managing team communications or designing engaging content.

This showcases your ability to weave diverse threads into solutions.

3. Curiosity Sprints

Instead of feeling guilty about abandoning interests or taking on new ones, set short-term “sprints” to explore them deeply without pressure.

  • For example, commit to a four-week Python sprint with a clear, small goal like building a basic web scraper.

  • At the end, decide whether to continue, pivot, or move on—guilt-free.

Part 10/11:

This method encourages experimentation and diversification, enriching your tapestry with new threads.

Reframing Your Identity

Your life story isn’t chaotic—it’s a curated collection of interconnected dots. That “graveyard of hobbies” isn’t barren soil but fertile ground for innovation. Each abandoned project, fleeting obsession, and half-read book nourishes your ability to craft solutions others cannot see.

Own your loom, cherish your threads, and take pride in your unique tapestry. Your capacity to connect, synthesize, and see the big picture is a rare and valuable superpower in the 21st century.

If this resonates with you, you’ve found your tribe. Subscribe to join a community of thinkers committed to redefining success as connectivity and creativity. Share your seemingly unrelated interests—perhaps a love for marine biology and data analytics—that combine into future solutions.

Because ultimately, your greatest strength lies in connecting dots—building bridges across disciplines to create a brighter, more innovative future.

Now, go weave your tapestry. Connect some dots.

I didn't watch the video but I come to the conclusion that is what I have been doing. Pulled myself in too many directions. I'm currently wrapping up some and then going to focus on a smaller amount but yet meaningful amount of actions.
