went to a concert last night. I am always driven made by how unsocial people are at concerts in Tokyo. They only talk to people they know.

I know japan is like this but I thought medium sized concerts were the perfect place for music fans to make friends. That’s how I made friends outside my hometown in high school

lol basically! To be fair some small shows aren’t like this but those are more tightly knit communities. Small venues are 90% empty shows and 10% really awesome friendly crowds. Medium sized venues that fill up are all pretty lifeless atmospheres where it feels like the audience is just consumers.

The bands I saw last night come from the former but are getting bigger. I don’t think they’ve sold out but they haven’t really found a way to knock their new normie fans out of zombie mode

I am trying to visualise a Japanese concert, but with how percieve the Japanese here in the UK, I can see everyone running around saying sorry if they bumped into one!

It is always fun to see your take on things over there

basically either people don’t move as much as western shows or it’s similar but with fewer of those assholes who try to knock over other people (though there was one last time).

There were a few much smaller shows that were cool, but this was the best medium sized band I saw as far as crowd goes

Oh man they are fluffing brilliant! I can see why the crowd was up for it! My god there are so many different instruments and soudns going on all at once. Then he sounds a bit Native American at times. Wow you must have had an absolute blast seeing them.
I am going to put them on my next edition of #ttt or threetunetuesday

lol I guess I can’t keep all my Japanese music secret forever 🤣

Last night was one of those quieter artists, tenniscoats and Mahitothepeople. I’ve seen tenniscoats at smaller shows overseas and it was brilliant and interactive, but at these bigger venues I just get frustrated that I can’t climb up on stage and sing with them or play around with other people in the audience

That was a great find & I've been listening to more of them!

Actually even here venues play a huge part of a gig experience. I remember the punk days in small venues, absolute mayhem but bloody (quite often quite literally) brilliant 🤣

I went to a punk show last month that had 80’s pop karaoke in between the bands. Was wild! I felt so lost though as I didnt know any of the songs, kind of deep stuff, not the city pop that everyone knows

and yeah a lot of people would say sorry if they bumped into someone but only if it was harder than the people around them are bumping into each other.

The weird thing for me is the acoustic or quieter music where the crowd is 100% silent for the entire show except for clapping. It drives me made cause if you blow your nose you feel like an asshole, so I always feel like the annoying foreigner

Haha like being in library when you dropped a pencil or something! Getting all those not so friendly glares 🤣

that’s how I feel at every “fun” event at Tokyo, unless it’s filled with punk rockers

Coming out was supposed to be to relate and make new friends…why attend if you would stick to the same old folks? Anyways hope you were able to break the statusquo?

that’s Japanese culture. They don’t really mingle with strangers. Most people are worried about disturbing others, they generally stick with friends from school or work.

I find it incredibly isolating. I try to break the status quo but as a foreigner they usually just say “ah it’s just because you are foreign” and they don’t follow suit
