Dreams

The applause quieted down as he stepped up to speak into the mic.
He took a moment to take it all in. The bright lights, the audience in their dazzling outfits, and the incredible individuals by his side.
He wasn't the owner of this dream, but he partook in it, it was his dream too, and they were all living in it.
He coughed back the cry welling up in his throat, and began his speech.
He gestured at his boss...
"When she came to me on the dance floor, she was stressed, tired and sweaty enough to make me wonder what battle she was fighting."
He paused for the laugh from the audience as they imagined that scene in their head.
"There was something in her eyes though. A certain raw doggedness that accepts she wouldn't rest there, wouldn't allow things to end just like that."
"She had a fire in her eyes that set the dry wood in my heart aflame. Originally, she came to ask if I would be willing to buy some stickers. Yet, as I sent that 1,000, little did we know that I had bought a dream."
Immediately, his alarm woke him up from his doze on his work desk. He looked around bleary eyed and shocked at the sudden bright light.
Immediately, his brain kicked into hyper gear and he dove into the bathroom. He was late for class.
From the bathroom, he could hear his phone notifications ringing out loud.
In less than 4 minutes he had bathed, brushed and toweled all in the bathroom.
He came out, stark naked and with damp hair, looking through his box for underwear while quickly glancing through the messages on his phone..
Hey babe, how're you doing today... You didn't reply to my message...
He hissed and swiped to the next chat of rants from his boss..
James you need to finish up that document....
James, where are the cost prices...
James your reports for the month..
James the database I asked for...
James!
James!!..
James!!!
In a haste he replied "Understood." Wore his clothes and then went to school.
He plopped on the bed tired and exhausted. It was a long day at work. Sadly, it was just Monday.
Starting a new shopping brand wasn't as easy as he thought. In fact, being a pioneer wasn't ever his idea of the job.
He got home by 6:30pm, still he had a meeting by 8 that would probably run into the night.
He had some debts to cover and some courses from school to buy.
He had to remember to talk to his girlfriend before he slept and he had to sleep before 10pm so he could read for the test in school by 8am tomorrow.
It was a gamble, still he crept up to his bed for a quick 30 minute nap, washing only his legs because of the dust and because he was too lazy for a full bath, he'd find time for that before his main sleep at night.
His alarm woke him up and he saw he was already late for the meeting.
Bleary-eyed, head ringing and not ready to leave his bed, he clicked on the Google Meet link and made sure to mute mic and block the video.
So was it that 20 minutes into the meeting, he was on his laptop getting materials in order for his assignment. He was also on Whatsapp replying to his babe and other important messages.
In no time at all —because he wasn't paying attention— the meeting had ended and he was asked to drop a recording of the minutes later.
It was 9pm, he was drained, hadn't eaten and was overstressed.
He was reprimanded for his inability to meet his targets that were set for him. He was in pain because his account transactions were mostly debit, he was tired because time wasn't enough anymore.
It was in days like this where he thought of ending it all, leaving the job, leaving the school, his home and just going away.
No direction, just away.
Still, he had a dream.
So with a sigh, a grumpy belly and a tired mind, he dragged himself back to his bed to revisit that dream, because he needed that dopamine once more.
He knew he needed to work to get it, but for now, let him see how it'll be once he's finally got it.
So he left all the work, the targets, the assignments, the tests, girlfriends, messages, friends and bathing and he did one thing that brought comfort.
He dreamt.
