Farm Day! - It’s Time to Upkeep and Hill Our Carrot Crops!

As farmers, it’s our goal and duty to maintain and care for our crops so they can grow healthy and yield plenty.

Greetings to all hardworking and kind fellow farmers here on Hive, especially to our in the @hivegarden community, how are you all doing?

Today, I want to share what's happening here on our farm, particularly with our carrot crops.

Our carrots are now more than a month old since planting, and it’s time to upkeep and hill them so they can grow bigger and healthier and also to produce yield.

But before that, we need first to thin out the carrots per line, because too many carrots growing in one line will compete for space and nutrients, outcome will small carrots or embracing roots. Ideally, there should only 4–5 carrots per column, giving each one room to grow properly.

Once we finished thinning all the carrots, we also applied some artificial fertilizer to help nourish the plants. We usually do the thinning if it is sunrise because if we do it during rainy day it will destroy the roots of the carrots and it will affect the growing of roots. After applying the amount of fertilizer we Now start the upkeep and hilling process. This part is quite laborious and time-consuming, since we have to be careful not to cover the carrots completely. Each row and space must be properly filled with soil to help the roots grow bigger and faster.

This is the most important part of carrots crop and if we skip this step, the carrots might become exposed to sunlight, change color, or produce smaller and lower-quality roots.

It’s definitely tiring and exhausting because our backs and legs can feel sore while working but it’s all worth, specially if it produce beautiful, high-quality carrots.

I’m glad my brother came and helped us out with this work, having someone around makes the job easier and faster. We also used a grab hoe for hilling since it’s the most efficient tool for hilling and upkeep vegetables crop here.
