I don't understand why the French state rejected his paintings. His painting Young Man at the Window, considered one of the pinnacles of Impressionism, sold for $53 million.

At the time none of the work being done by the Impressionist artists was considered 'real' art. I'm pretty sure they regret being so judgemental!
That's true.
Well, we have a completely different perspective on art here. The state pays artists. Not all of them, of course, but quite a few.
