Tigran Hamasyan - One Body, One Blood
Tigran Hamasyan, who comes from Armenia, is one of the most prominent contemporary jazz pianists and composers. He started playing music at a very early age, reportedly playing Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and others on the piano at 3... At 13, he composed jazz pieces and blended them with Armenian folk music, which he still does today – complex rhythms and modal scales, duduk and ashug traditions, and fusion with progressive rock, metal, electronica, and live improvisation. He has released 12 albums to date.
The song One Body, One Blood is from his latest album Manifeste, which was released in early February this year. Stylistically, it is an intense, spiritual mix of contemporary jazz, Armenian tradition, electronics, and choral vocals. A landscape where rhythms repeat, change, and build into a cathartic climate of unity, probably in the context of Armenian identity and global conflicts.
Kerala Dust - WHITE NOISE
You may have noticed (those who follow #newtunes, of course) that I mention this band quite often. I've been following them since their beginnings (2016), and they keep getting better and better. They play a mix of art rock, downtempo, deep house, and electronica with influences of Americana and desert blues. They have 3 studio albums to date.
The song White Noise is a standalone single, released two days ago, and takes them even further into hypnotic, rave-like electronica. Great for the car or a nightclub...
Social Distortion - Born To Kill
Social Distortion is a legendary American punk rock, cowpunk band from the first generation of the Californian punk scene (Black Flag, Circle Jerks, etc.). They come from Orange County, California, USA. They started in 1978, had huge dramas from addiction to the death of some members, but always picked themselves up and kept playing. They have released seven studio albums and are announcing their eighth album, Born To Kill, for May this year.
The title track is the first single from this album, a metaphor for the fight against the system. Energetic and classic punk, basically a rock 'n' roll song with powerful guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and hoarse vocals.
The Claypool Lennon Delirium - The Golden Egg of Empathy ft. WILLOW
I already mentioned The Claypool Lennon Delirium once this year in #newtunes. For me, they are still a new band, a project by Primus bassist and multi-instrumentalist Lennon (yes, the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono). Their music is always a strange, entertaining mix of progressive rock, psychedelia, funk, experimentation, and humor.
The Golden Egg of Empathy is their latest single, released a few days ago, and heralds the album The Great Parrot, which will be released in May. Willow, Will Smith's daughter, helps them with the vocals, adding an even more surreal touch.
The Dandy Warhols - Love Song (The Damned Cover)
The Dandy Warhols are an American band from Portland, formed in 1994, and have released 12 albums to date. Alternative and psychedelic, guitar and electronic rock, a mixture of current styles and nostalgia from the last century. I have been following them since 2000, actually, since I heard their hit Bohemian Like You.
The song "Love Song" is a cover of a 1979 song by The Damned and heralds a new covers album, Pin Ups, which will be released in March this year. I'm going to listen to all the covers on the album :)
Suzi Quatro - Freedom
Who doesn't know Suzi Quatro? She may be American, but she was a superstar in Europe, Australia, and Japan in the 1970s. She has released 17 albums, and in March this year, at the age of 75, she will release a new one titled after the song. I remember her from my childhood because she was often on television.
The song Freedom is nothing particularly new, just upbeat, energetic rock 'n' roll with a message about freedom and feeling comfortable in her own skin. Yes, I would also sing about freedom if I were in her shoes :)
Gluecifer - Pharmacity
Gluecifer is a Norwegian hard rock, garage, and punk rock band from Oslo, one of the most important bands in the Scandinavian rock wave of the late 1990s. Formed in 1994, they have released six studio albums, the latest being Same Drug New in January this year, their first new album in more than 20 years.
The song Pharmacity is a classic rock tune, a mix of hard rock and pop guitars, with a touch of the 70s.
Daft Punk - Human After All (Official Music Video)
Daft Punk hasn't existed for five years, but they still release music occasionally. The song Human After All was released in 2005, a minimalist, repetitive techno track with robotic vocals, and the official video was released a week ago, on the fifth anniversary of the duo's breakup.
The video uses archive footage from Electrome, an avant-garde sci-fi film without dialogue or music, about two robots who want to become human. Still a relevant topic for the present, and at the same time a breath of fresh air for old techno...
