Lykke Li - Lucky Again
I haven't heard from Lykke Li, the Swedish singer-songwriter, in quite some time. Where has she been hiding for the past few years? She has been performing since 2008 and has released five studio albums to date. I know her for her pleasant dream pop and soft, sensitive vocals.
The song 'Lucky Again' is her latest single, a preview of her sixth album, The Afterparty, which will be released in May. This song is also in her usual style, actually more disco pop than dream pop, and talks about the circle of life, happiness, loss, and the hope that you will be lucky again someday.
All Them Witches - Red Rocking Chair
All Them Witches is an American rock band from Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Since 2012, they have played a mix of heavy psych rock, blues rock, stoner rock, and neo-psychedelic elements. To date, they have released six studio albums.
The song Red Rocking Chair is their latest single, released a week ago, and is a cover, or rather an adaptation, of the traditional American folk/bluegrass song Sugar Baby. They have transformed it into a slow, hypnotic blues-and-heavy-rock track with a long groove, massive riffs, and dark energy. The lyrics address lost love and classic folk motifs, but in their performance, it sounds like a dark, doom-laden mantra.
Anna Calvi - Godβs Lonely Man
Anna Calvi is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist from London. She studied music (violin) and then focused on the guitar and a solo career. To date, she has released several EPs and three studio albums.
The song 'God's Lonely Man' is a duet with Iggy Pop, and sonically it's her signature art-rock, with bluesy guitar riffs and punk energy. It's also a preview of the upcoming EP 'Is This All There Is?', which will be released in March and is expected to feature new collaborations. I will be following it closely, as she is also rumored to be collaborating with Laurie Anderson.
Morrissey - Notre-Dame
Puscifer - The Algorithm
Puscifer is an experimental rock project led by Maynard Keenan, better known as the frontman and vocalist of Tool and A Perfect Circle. The band was formed in 2003 in Los Angeles and has released five studio albums to date. Their sound blends industrial rock, trip-hop, post-punk, and electronica, and their live performances resemble theatrical circus acts.
The song The Algorithm is an original composition, first released in May 2024 as a single for the soundtrack to the comic book series American Psycho (Sumerian Comics). It's a critical, satirical song about social media addiction, 'attention addiction' and 'social mediots'. As Sessanta Live Mix, it has been added to the new album Normal Isn't, which was released a week ago.
Chair - When I Walk
Chair is a Polish alternative indie rock band from Warsaw. They have been active since 2020 and have released one EP and three albums to date. They play energetic, raw post-punk with influences from no-wave, indie, and the contemporary Polish alternative scene. They are known for their DIY approach and provocative live performances.
This is a new name for me.
The song 'When I Walk' is a single; I'm not sure if it's a preview of a new album. It's a post-punk track with a sharp, repetitive structure, strong rhythm and distortion, and lyrics that criticize conformity, social pressure, and 'looking like everyone else.'
Penny Arcade - Rear View Mirror
Penny Arcade is a solo project by British musician James Hoare from London. He has also been involved in indie/pop bands such as Veronica Falls, Ultimate Painting, and The Proper Ornaments. He has been playing as Penny Arcade since 2024. So far, he has released one album: minimalist indie-pop/psych-pop with a soft, melancholic sound and vintage rhythms (often a rhythm box), intertwined with guitars and introspective lyrics. For me, he is a new artist I did not know until now.
The song 'Rear View Mirror' is a preview of his new, second album, Double Exposure, which will be released in April. It sounds warm and nostalgic, with a slightly melancholic, groovy energy. The lyrics are simple and not overly dramatic.
Kim Gordon - Dirty Tech
Kim Gordon, from Rochester, New York, USA, is an icon of the no-wave/post-punk scene β best known as the bassist, singer, and co-founder of Sonic Youth (1981β2011). After the band broke up, she released two solo albums with an experimental, noisy, beat-oriented sound.
The song Dirty Tech is the second single from her third solo album, Play Me, which will be released in March this year. The single was released two days ago and features Kim in an empty corporate office, set in a cold, dystopian atmosphere. With a nervous trap beat, characteristic spoken word, and sarcastic vocals, she criticizes modern society, dependence on technology, AI taking control, and the power struggle between humans and robots. Typical and sharply critical.
πΆ That should be all for today, thanks for your attention, and enjoy your weekend with new songs!
