Beer Tasting Abbaye de Vauclair - Imperiale

avatar

Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

The heat here's not letting up, and it's advisable to avoid being outside or doing any physical work until late afternoon.
We are now in cooler rooms, where everything is somewhat tolerable, with a glass of cold liquid in hand. And it's not water :)

Today, it's a bottle of French beer that's been in the fridge all week, and hopefully it'll be cold enough to satisfy my thirst, 418th in a row, #beersaturday.
I usually have two bottles, but this one is bigger than the average 0.5 l, it'll be enough for today :)

🍻 😎 🍻

Abbaye de Vauclair - Imperiale

Brewed by Brasserie Goudale, Arques, France. Brewed for Lidl France.
Bottle, 0.75 l, alcohol 7.5% ABV, IBU 25. It's Blonde Ale, or Bière de Garde style beer.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Amber Beers de Grande, sweet and malty, with the notes of caramel, bread, gums, orange peel and resin, alcoholic and moderately bitter in taste. Flavored with Flanders hops and top-fermenting aromas, gives all its character and balance. It is golden, dense, tasty and long on the palate.

I bought it at a local Lidl store for €2.95. At first, I thought it was some wine and that it was a mistake to put it on the beer shelf.

When I researched this, I found that beer was also brewed by the Cistercian monks of Vauclerc Abbey, founded in 1134 by St. Bernard of Clairvaux. However, I could not find any information on whether it is now brewed according to their ancient recipe.
In fact, both Grok and Gemini have told me that it's a modern product, incorporating various additives unknown at the time, and exploiting the romantic image of monastic brewing for marketing ...
Whatever it is, it's here, and I'm going to empty this bottle :)

The beer is clear and golden in colour; the head is average. It smells of malt and herbs. The sip goes down the throat smoothly. In the mouth, I first taste the sweetness of malt and honey, which is followed by the bitterness of grapefruit or orange, along with coriander, which is slightly spicy, likely due to the higher alcohol content.
In the aftertaste, everything slowly fades away, except for the bitterness, which lingers for some time.

A very drinkable and tasty beer!
Complex, with a variety of flavours, sweet, bitter, floral, and fruity. Alcohol is perceptible but not so much that it would be disturbing, of course, if I had another one, it would be a different story for sure :) 😜
You can occasionally get it in local Lidl stores, and I'm sure some more will end up in my fridge.

As I read, it's brewed for Lidl France, but now I'm unsure. Perhaps Lidl Slovenia belongs to Lidl France, but I'm not certain.

From how you describe it, it sounds a bit like Adelscott from the '90s, or is it less sweet? though it doesn’t seem amber from the pictures, and maybe whisky-like. It sounds like something worth trying!

I don't know Adelscott, so I can't answer that.
The sweetness is not very pronounced; it has nothing to do with whisky, and it is not aged in such casks. It is a modern take on an old-fashioned beer, available in large European supermarket chain. No matter what, it is surprisingly drinkable!

Looked like a Stout from the outside, but more like a Carlsberg or Heineken in the inside. Salud 🍺

It's true. Usually, these or similar bottles are for a stout aged in whisky casks.

@seckorama This testament has big impact to me when it comes to taste, appearance and most especially in flavors. There's reason to come by or take a little sip that stroke to your veins and give a kicks on it. The aroma and taste encourage to explore too like in being talky such in gatherings, events and make an joyful memories. Though it has artistry on it that experimenting with herbs, fruits and others too. It suprises me and satisfy what you shared here so applause to that. We discover to appreciate more as well so keep us posted please. AJA! newbie here
