What is it Like in a Modern League After Chaos Legion?

This is the first season without Chaos Legion set in the Modern League. I wanted to see what it is like playing in Modern with a Gold level deck. I am sure many others are curious about what it is like in the Modern League right now. If you would like to read about my personal perspective please read on!

SPS Earnings

First I would like to take a look at what you can earn per battle in Modern and compare it to SPS earnings in Wild.

In Wild I am around mid 3800s and earn between 4.5 and 5 SPS per battle.

In Modern I seem to be stuck around the area of 3260 and 3440 range. Granted my second account has a bit less SPS staked, and at a lower ranking by at least 400 points compared to Wild I am still earning between 12.5 and 17 SPS per battle which is around three times SPS earnings compared to what you can earn in Wild right now.

If you look at the image above you will notice that at some times of the day the match liquidity in Modern is not very good. Please note that all of the players without guild are liquidity bots. Good news you can avoid them if you don't let the search for the battle last over 40 seconds. Also these bots now don't have some of the strongest cards in the game such as Tofu summoners, but the bad news is that at my rating these bots are playing fully maxed out modern decks.

If you look at my screenshot: I had 6 battles against liquidity bots out of ten total battles. That is 60% of the matches were against bots and 40% were against humans in Modern league.

SPS earnings in Modern seem to be still going up for the same ranking as SPS pools in Modern are refilling so I would expect these SPS earnings in Modern to improve even further maybe get to 20 SPS per battle with my amount of SPS staked at 3400 rating.

I would also expect SPS earnings to go up slightly in Wild as we are likely to have less players without a free Wild Pass.

Number of Battles

The chart below from Peak Monsters Dashboard shows us the last seven days in terms of number of battles in Modern vs Wild format. It also includes the last day of the previous season.

What you can see from this chart is that overall number of battles has increased compared to the last day of the previous season. Most of this increase is coming from the Wild league which is in purple. Last day of last season was approximately thirty two thousand battles per day, this season the number of battles spiked up to sixty five thousand per day and then stabilized around forty nine thousand battles.

My thoughts on the increase in wild battles is that this is due to the limited time free Wild Pass and also people migrating their modern decks into the Wild only from previously playing in Modern format only or in both formats.

The number of modern battles stayed the same at around fourteen thousand battles per day.

Ranking in Modern

So how far can you get in Modern with an incomplete Gold level deck? Well we are only about a week into this season, but at this time I seem to be stuck between 3200 and 3440. That is high Diamond 2 and low Diamond 1 ranking.

I would expect as season goes on I will be able to move up in ranking as stronger players move out of my ranking range, but as noted below liquidity bots playing maxed out modern decks could become a problem.

So what kind of opponents would you expect in Modern right now? Well, because the liquidity is so small in Modern right now it is not un-usual to have +/- 300 ranking points right now, with some opponents that were over 600 points higher in ranking than me. But usually it is within 300 points of your ranking:

At the higher than 3,600 rankings most of the decks are maxed out modern decks.

In the 3,000 range I see players with Silver level decks like Nozem was using. These ranking brackets are a bit wide, it would have been nice to limit them to 150 ranking points, but unfortunately that would mean even less match liquidity in Modern.

So what are the decks like in the 3,200 range? Well there are a mixture of all kinds of decks there and it is especially hard to tell, as some players like @aftersound have maxed out decks for some elements, but when the ruleset is very restrictive to just one element they have level one cards like in this case when only death splinter was available:

Conclusion

It is a very different landscape in the Modern league now compared to the Chaos Legion era. The SPS rewards are definitely higher but not to the point of doubling just yet, though we may still get there.

Modern meta has changed and is probably still evolving and you get all kinds of players with various levels of decks in your battles, not everyone has maxed out Rebellion and Conclave Arcana decks as @azircon does.
