π¬ 2025 Movie #44 | One Battle After Another π₯

)One Battle After Another (6.7/10)
This movie is directed by Paul Thomas Andersson who is known for Magnolia, Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, and more recently Licorice Pizza. I might have seen Boogie Nights bit I'm not sure so this pretty much was my first experience with this director. At times it was a bit weird especially with the caricature character of the military guy.
The movie was close to 3 hours but I only really felt it at the start which kind of dragged on while the end of the movie was far more enjoyable.
The Plot
When their evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years, a group of ex-revolutionaries reunite to rescue the daughter of one of their own.
The movie introcuces us to a group of freedom fighters who try to fight the system. I kind of had the same feeling when I watched Civil War where I didn't fully understand why there was a war while watching that movie which took away from my initial enjoyment. However, that movie really grew on me afterward, while for One Battle After Another it still doesn't really make much sense to me. The story in full however, was pretty clear and well worked out and you don't exit the theater with the feeling thinking "what did I just watch" needing to look for an explaination.
The main female lead played by Teyana Taylor also was a character that annoyed me for some reason so that didn't help. Dicaprio as always was great and the supporting cast also did great. The way Sean Penn played the charicature Military dude to me was just too weird and felt really strange from start to finish.

Conclusion
I didn't hate this movie and kind of enjoyed it for what it was while at the same time it makes me avoid any other movies directed by Paul Thomas Anderson as there was just something weird about it which isn't my thing. So a respectable 6.7/10 while I'm surprised that this continues to get a 8.2 score on imdb.

This is definetely one of the least cerebral Paul Thomas Anderson movies.
It really felt more like a three hour action movie but somehow I never really felt that it dragged. Even all the exposition in the first part was relatively easy to follow for me.
There were some cool and entertaining sequences that stood out and specifically the final chase was really thrilling and cinematic.
I do agree with you, in general, with the overall value of the movie. An interesting movie but I doubt it can make a claim for best film of the year as it seems to lack the seriousness and impact that these auteur films usually have.
Still, I only saw it once at the theater and it was entertaining enough that it definetely deserves a second view at some point in the future. Maybe then I'll appreciate it even more!
