Language is more than just a means of communication; it is a bridge that connects people, cultures, and opportunities.
In a country like Nigeria, where there are hundreds of languages spoken across different regions, understanding another language can open doors that would otherwise remain closed.
For this week’s Hive Reachout prompt, “Another Language You Want To Learn,” the language I would truly love to learn is Yoruba.
I have lived around Yoruba-speaking people, and over time, I have come to realize how important their language is, especially when it comes to daily interactions, relationships, and even business. Although English helps us communicate at a basic level, it does not always create that deep connection people naturally feel when you speak their native language. Speaking Yoruba, even at a basic level, immediately makes one feel more accepted and trusted.
One strong reason I want to learn Yoruba is business-related. If you intend to run a business in a Yoruba-dominated environment, understanding the language is a big advantage. Customers feel more comfortable buying from someone who understands them, jokes with them, and relates to their everyday expressions.
Even simple greetings in Yoruba can change how people respond to you. I have personally seen people receive favors, discounts, and loyal customers simply because they could speak or understand Yoruba. This alone shows how powerful language can be.
Beyond business, Yoruba language carries a rich cultural identity. The proverbs, expressions, greetings, and respect culture embedded in the language are truly admirable. Yoruba people place great importance on respect, and this is reflected in how the language is spoken, especially when addressing elders. Learning Yoruba would help me better understand their values, traditions, and way of life, rather than just observing them from the outside.
Another major reason I want to learn Yoruba is music. I am a lover of music, and I also love to create music. Yoruba language blends beautifully into songs. Whether it is Afrobeat, Fuji, Apala, Juju, or even modern Nigerian pop music, Yoruba lyrics have a rhythm and emotional depth that is hard to ignore. Many popular Nigerian songs gain extra flavor simply because of Yoruba lines added to them. I want to be able to understand these lyrics fully and also express myself creatively in that language.
Music is a powerful tool for storytelling and connection, and learning Yoruba would allow me to tell stories that resonate deeply with Yoruba listeners. It would also help me reach a wider audience and connect emotionally with people who appreciate hearing their language represented in art. Understanding the meaning behind Yoruba musical expressions would improve my songwriting and musical creativity.
Another important reason is social integration. Living among people without understanding their language can sometimes make one feel like an outsider. Learning Yoruba would help me blend in better, communicate more confidently, and build stronger friendships. Even small conversations in the local language can bring laughter, warmth, and a sense of belonging.
As for my plans, I do not want learning Yoruba to remain just a wish. I intend to start learning gradually. I plan to begin with common words, greetings, and everyday expressions. Listening to Yoruba conversations, watching Yoruba movies, and paying attention to song lyrics are practical ways I can learn naturally. I also believe practicing with native speakers around me will help me improve faster.
Learning a new language requires patience and consistency, but the benefits are worth it. From business growth to cultural understanding and musical creativity, Yoruba offers me so many opportunities. It is not just about speaking another language; it is about embracing a culture, building trust, and expanding my personal and professional life.
Thank you for your time.💗💗
In conclusion, Yoruba is the language I would love to learn because it connects strongly with what I do, and what I love. It represents opportunity, creativity, and community. I look forward to taking real steps toward learning it and hopefully using it meaningfully in my daily life, business, and music journey.
Yoruba is a lovely language to learn and the people are very accommodating too. Goodluck
