Hello there! @saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!

Rebellion was the 5th major set that was introduced into Splinterlands and just like the previous sets, it has introduced a new batch of abilities to the game, expanding the variety of strategies and card synergies that we can use to win our battle. That is why it is important for us to familiarize with how this new abilities work.

And so, with the previous weeks, I did started to have my in depth review on the Rebellion abilities to know what are their weakness and which situations they prevail. I temporarily paused it last week to give way for my review on the promo event but I once again resume it this week to take a look on the Impede Ability.

What is Impede Ability?

ability_impede.png

Impede is an ability that was first introduced as part of the tactics ability for the 6th Rebellion Conflict Summoner. This ability reduces the speed of the target by 1 for each successful attack, meaning that this ability will only activate when the monster hits its target. This ability makes it similar to Cripple but unlike Cripple, the status effect from Impede can be Cleansed.

Prons

👟 Can reduce the speed of the target multiple times until the speed of the target is 1.

💔 Even when the Unit with Impede was defeated, the effects of Impede will still persist.

🚴 When Cleansed, Impede can be re- applied.

Cons

☀️ The speed that was reduced through Impede can be Cleansed.

🎯 Impede will only works when the monster with Impede hits the Target.

🎇 When paired with Blast, Impede will only reduced the damage of the target.

Best Ruleset

What Doesn't Kill You
All Monsters have the enrage.png Enrage ability.
img_combat-rule_need-for-speed_150.png
Need For Speed
You can only summon units with 3 or more speed.

Bad Ruleset

reverse-speed.png
Reverse Speed
Monsters with the lowest Speed attack first and have the highest chance of evading attacks.

Basically, using units with Impeded works with most rulesets as reducing the speed of the opponent allows your team to be able to attack faster but playing it during What Doesn't Kill You can slow the monster that gains speed from Enrage will play to your advantage as well as during Need for Speed where units has 3 or more speed. The only ruleset where Impede may be disadvantageous is during Reverse Speed as the slower unit gets to attack first.

Cards with Impede Ability

As of the moment, there are only 4 cards with the Impede ability with the dual summoner Risqruel Drath as the very first card that can give the ability during the Tactics Phase.

Battle Showcase

Battle 1: Meriput Slinger

image.png

In this battle, I used the reward card Meriput Slinger and in round 1, it goes to attack Arkemis the Bear which during that time, ahas it's speed boosted from the effect of the Enrage ability, turning its speed to 5 but when it was successfully hit, its speed was reduced to 3. This is because the effects of Impede applies first to the speed of the target before it was affected by Enrage.

    Pre- Impede: Speed : 3 * 1.5 (Enrage) = 5 Rounded Up

    Post- Impede: Speed : (3 - 1 (Impede) ) * 1.5 (Enrage) = 3

image.png

Immediately, on the first round Night Reaper has inflicted 3 damage to Void Dragon even though it was on the second position as it has the Flying ability. Also with Void, Void Dragon was only supposed to receive 2 damage as it was halve but because of Wingbreak, there was an additional damage into it. How it comes with those damage comes with this interaction.

    3 Original Damage + 2 Wingbreak Damage = 5 Total damage / 2 (Void) = 3 (Rounded Up)

Battle 2: Warborn Shaman

Closing

As a new ability that comes with Rebellion set, Impede can be a very impactful ability as speed plays a vital role in matches, either for the ability to attack first or by dodging an attack and the lesser speed the opponent has, the lower the chance that they can do either of the two.

Thank you and see you at the next post.

Great point about reverse speed. I've been mostly using Mana Warden to toughen the jelly cube; trying to remember to use him in reach ruleset where he can hit (and impede) from second position too.

Nice! Gelatinous Cube can be a good Gb Smith alternative with Shield Ward though I wish they added the reach ability to Mana Warden to have more utility.
