The Road To Become A Great Battle Mage

Hello there! @saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!
It was almost the end of the year and this will probably be my last Splinterlands post for 2025 even though there was still a lot of topics that I want to talk about. But can't really help it since this time of the year can be really hectic as we welcome for the new year to come with a positive outlook.
Anyway, what I want to explore for this week's Community Engagement Challenge is the path that I take to become a better Splinterlands player through the past 4 years that I played Splinterlands, competing in the highest leagues of the game and through this, I hope that it can help anyone who wishes to try the game find their paths to power, though that may also mean making things more difficult for myself.

The Road to Power is Paved by Sweat and Tears

There is a saying that the road to power is paved with sweat and tears, and playing Splinterlands cannot be really far from that. It is a game that is easy to play, but hard to master, specially with the ever-evolving mechanics of the game that even the players on the very top will find it difficult to adjust right away. And I'm not just saying this baselessly, I'm saying this as someone who usually get a spot on Diamond/Champion leaderboard with almost 19k battles in modern alone. As a veteran player, I can say that has been playing for a long time, I can say that for a person to be a great player to this game, he will experience a ton of defeats and failures, and by learning about those failures that a player can be at the top.
There is also not a single card or lineup that would take you at the top. Having OP or meta cards does not necessarily means winning the battle. Unless you want to be at the top of the top, you do not need to own and rent all the card. It comes from how you play with the deck in your hand and understanding the game rules to build the best lineup you can build with the card that you have as well as by anticipating what lineup the opponent has. No matter how strong the team does the opponent has, if they continuously spam it, you will eventually find a lineup that could counter them. This is something you can see at this post from captaindingus and this is another battle from me.

In fact, seeing how players spam strong lineups just makes them more readable and easy to counter, so even I with an inferior lineup can still win battles against them.

Don't Be Afraid To Experiment
Some of the players, knowing that their opponent holds a vast collection of card or just had a better deck than them would sometimes surrender if they ever meet with the opponent in a battle, as they rightfully accepted defeat. I think that this is a wasted opportunity because they are giving up the chance to learn from their opponent. Rather than throwing the battle, I think its best use that battle to experiment with what team to play. You might not be able to win against the opponent, but use the experience from that to build yourself a better lineup that could counter that team. There are even some 3rd party Splinterlands tools like Xbot's battle vision that could allow you to simulate battles and even freely replace the cards to find the optimal counter against the opponent's team. I am just not sure how accurate it is right now, given that new sets of cards had been released, but if more players used this tool, I think it will give sylar the reason to update the tool.

Don't Sleep On Reward Cards
I think there are players that are sleeping on the reward cards, just because it is something you can get by playing the game and most of them are soulbound, but I think this way of thinking is wrong because the more cards you had, the more lineups you can make, expanding the strategies you can make. There are even situations where I used a team completely made of reward cards, such as this battle and won. Having a complete and fully maxed reward card, can be a good way to level the playing field and compensate for the core cards that you do not have.

That is why, I always emphasize in my post how my priority is to gain the most Glint and strategize how I can get the most of it.

Closing
And those were some of the things I can share to help inspire the next wave of Splinterlands Champions. But the best thing I could advice is just to continue playing the game every day, get accustomed to the abilities, debilitations of the cards, and played the best card that you can think of with the available modifiers.
Thank you, and see you on the next post!
