I Can't Believe Students Made This Beautiful Game

Hello fellow gamers! @saydie here with some gaming stories that I want to share.

Although I have joined the Hive Gaming community a long time ago, it will be my first time to write a gaming post that is not Hive or web3 related. But really, gaming is one of the things that I was passionate about, as it was one of my hobbies. So when I saw the Comeback and Contest Announcement Post shared in my feed, I suddenly got the urge to write gaming content.

For my entry, I was debating with myself about which of the two games I'm currently playing this week I should write about. There was Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, which, if you are familiar with soulslike games, will give you impressive win/clutch plays as well as tons of epic fail moments (I mean it literally.) along with beautiful, almost realistic scenes, which should be since it is a AAA game made using Unreal Engine. The other game that I'm playing right now was the indie game Curyeux, which is a 3D platformer that I stumbled upon by accident and is also made using Unreal Engine, making it another beautiful game.

Eventually, I decided to go with Curyeux and go for the beautiful Scene theme, cause even though I find both games beautiful, I just find Curyeux to have a more vibrant, living-breathing world, and the fact that it was a game that was made by students in just 15 weeks (unlike some Ubislop AAAA game that takes 10 years to finish) makes me want to root for them and for other people to also experience this game. Oh! And also, before I forgot, this game is currently free on Steam, so you can try the game right now and share your thoughts.

Before playing, I didn't expect much from the game since it was only made by students and might as well be just another asset flip. It can be a fun-bad game, though, if I find some game-breaking glitch or bug. But to my surprise, the game works very smoothly, and the controls are very responsive. The only bug that I saw so far is that the language always defaults to French when I open the game again, which is not that much of an issue. After all, the visuals of the game were very astonishing, and by which the storytelling heavily relies on rather than long cutscenes and dialogue.

To make a short description, Lucienne Grégoire, the protagonist of the game, was a painter who was suddenly transported to a fantasy world, inside her canvas, with landscapes shaped by her memories and feelings. As she navigates through this world, she will go through different platforms and puzzles that were affected by her memories and different psychological states. This means that aside from platforming and puzzle-solving skills, players must also pay attention to the different cues in the environment in response to Lucienne’s internal state.

Since the world was influenced by her memories, it was filled with different drawings and paintings along the way, each of which is incredibly detailed and very colorful and while some platformer games have time caps, Curyeux does not incorporate time limits so players have all the time in the world to appreciate the paintings and the environment. Rather, looking at the environmental design is important to understand the game's story.

Although there were puzzles along the way, I would say that for those that I have passed through, the puzzles were not that difficult and just enough to stimulate your brain, and the way that you can interact with those is through the eyes that follow you (certainly this eyes works better than Minds Eye, if you know what I mean 😜), such as moving platforms or passing through portraits.

Closing

At this point, I don't really know what more to say without spoiling the game aside from it being beautiful and vibrant, and how I like the game's approach of telling the story through the environment, so I can take my time to look at the scenery. I have yet to finish the game, but hopefully I will find the time to finish it this weekend.

Before I forgot, today is also the first day of the month, meaning it's another Power-up day. Compared to my last Power up where I added 100 Hive, I only power-up 10 Hive this time since I almost forgot about it and only bought Hive recently just to not break my power-up streak. This will be my 12th straight month of consistent #hpud and will continue with the rest of the year.

What? Made by students in just 15 weeks? That's a huge milestone. The game looks impressive, especially seeing how vibrant and detailed the world looks. It's nice to see indie games like this getting some spotlight.

Yeah... Insane right? specially now, with games projects taking many years to produce is the norm despite lots of developers working on it.

The fact that it was created by students is impressive when you see what the game is like. It shows that group was very creative, as it is visually stunning and not generic. Even when watching the trailer, I noticed that several animations/cinematics are not clumsy at all; they look great

Indeed, for an indie game that was made by students, it was certainly impressive and shows that even with a small budget, people can make an amazing game.
