Escalation New Abilities: Part 1

Hello there! @saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!

In more or less two weeks from now, the presale for the upcoming new mini-set for Conclave Arcana called Escalation, will finally take place, and once again, we will be introduced to a new set of cards, along with new interesting abilities that can shake the game's meta. As of the moment, there are only a few cards from the set that have been revealed through different community members, so we do not yet have a grasp of how this set will impact the game, but from the few cards that were revealed, we got to see some of the new abilities.
So, for this Splinterlands post, I want to talk about the new abilities that come in Escalation.

New Abilities from Escalation

Supposed to be, Escalation was meant to come in December 2025, but maybe because of the many new stuff that the team has been added to the game, its release was moved to February 10th, 2026, and I think it's for the best because they were able iron out the mechanics of the set, like with the adjusted Conflicts and how it will be distributed, and it will also be good for everyone that specifically bought Rebellion, because their stay in modern ranked has been extended. That said, the team has not fully left us in the dark, because before they left for the winter holiday, they showed us the icons, of the upcoming Escalation abilities, albeit their names and descriptions remain a secret. But with that, we can conclude that at least 9 new abilities were coming into the game. Right now, more than half of it was already revealed, but with the remaining few are still unknown, I decided to cut this topic in two parts.
Anyway, here are the new abilities.

Apex Strike is a new Escalation ability, which will target the enemy unit with the highest amount of damage. It's kind of like the reverse of the Opportunity ability that will instead target the enemy unit with the lowest health. However, there is an off chance that this works more like the Wingbreak ability that targets enemy units with Flying. The biggest difference between Wingbreak and Opportunity is that it has the ability to bypass Taunt, and if that's the case, then this could be a really threatening ability, cause it will attack the enemy's best attacker, which many do not have a lot of health.
It is also yet unclear whether Apex Strike will be able to hit the target, in case they have Camouflage or when Now You See Mee and Fog Of War were an active modifier. When it comes to who will it attack first in case multiple units have the same damage, but different attack types, I think they will go the same way with Brute Force.

Bloodline Pact, on the other hand, will give units that share the card with this ability's Bloodline an additional damage when any of the defeats an enemy. Kind of similar to Bloodlust, but applied to more units. However, there are some drawbacks to this ability, as all units with the same bloodline will take 1 true damage when any of them is defeated, and if it's the unit with the Bloodline Pact was the one defeated, it will result in all the damage the other cards gain to be lost and each of the cards will take 2 damage.
So, if you look at this ability, it seems to be more of a debilitation, since the ability can be quite powerful, but takes a huge risk to use.

For the third ability, we have the Bulwark, where when the unit with this ability takes the first position, it will gain an additional 8 armor and health, technically turning the unit into a tank, However, the unit will also lose 2 damage, which will make it ineffective as an attacker.
Again, this seems to be like a debilitation, but its downside is on the lighter side. And I guess, it will benefit more with range cards that lose their ability to attack when they go to the first position.

For this ability, Determined will allow a card to attack again if it misses an attack at the same target, which is like an opposite to Trample that will allow a card to attack once again if it defeats a target. But since this ability only works when a unit misses an attack, it cannot work under the Aim True modifier or when a card has the True Strike ability. At the same time, since it still carries the risk of missing its second attack, it can be really at a disadvantage if the enemy unit has the Backfire ability.
But I guess, this ability could be fun, if the card also has abilities like Double Strike or Execute, and see the interaction with each of those abilities.

And for the last ability that I want to talk about, we got the Shadow Focus ability, which, when the unit with this ability was in the last position, the unit gains the Camouflage ability, so that it cannot be targeted by opportunity attacks. At the same time, all allied units will gain +1 damage and the Determined ability.
The only downside of this ability is that the unit with Shadow Focus cannot attack, unless it moves to the first position, which is very much means that it is the only card remaining in your team.
Looking at the ability, some of the potential ways that we can counter this of is by using cards with the Reveal ability that will remove its Camouflage. Another was through Scattershot, but that was more of an RNG-based approach. And last will be the Blast ability that will inflict damage to the card if it was next to the original target.

Closing
And those were the first five new abilities for Escalation. Most of them have some downsides to using, but when used properly, they can be really powerful and fun to use. And let us not forget that the cards that will have these abilities will also likely have a couple of other abilities that will synergize with these new abilities, turning them more powerful. And I guess that's the reason why the set was named Escalation.
Thank you, and see you on the next post!

STOPThank you for writing this post. I didn't realize there were so many new abilities already shared for this new set. You did a great job summarizing the effect these new abilities will have in the metagame, so I feel much more prepared for the new batch of cards!
Yeah, the new abilities were interesting and look fun to play with. There are at least 2 other abilities that have not revealed yet, along with the new kindred will synergies.
