Brute Force: An Idea Before Now, A New Modifier

Hello there! @saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!

One of the things that brings depth to the strategic gameplay of Splinterlands are its modifiers. They are a set of rules that change the winning condition of every battle. Sometimes, it will bring bonuses that could strengthen both teams, while on other occasions, it will bring debilitations that will weaken both of them. Under certain situations, it will even restrict what type of cards each player can use and will even disable some or all of the cards' abilities. So it is not an exaggeration to say that modifiers are sometimes something that a player should be more cautious of, rather than the opponent they were facing.

And as the new year starts, one of the recent game updates that the team has deployed into the game was an all-new modifier, further evolving the game. But a few months ago, this new modifier was nothing but just an idea. In this post, I want to talk about the Brute Force modifier.

With the addition of the new modifier, we now have a total of 66 Modifiers, and during each battle, there can be up to 3 active modifiers in play, depending on which league a player is currently competing in. And now, with the addition of a new modifier, players will once again need to experiment and build new strategies for them to win their battles. The modifier was called Brute Force, and has the following description.

Brute Force is a new modifier where units with the highest power attack first.

-- Units with multiple attacks have their highest individual attack considered, not the cumulative total of all attacks.
-- Attack modifiers like Double Strike are not factored in.

Usually, the priority of attack in most battles was based on which card was the fastest, and if cards had the same speed, it would be determined by either their attack type, rarity, or level, as what was illustrated below, but under the Reverse Speed ruleset, the attack order gets the other way around.

But then, if the attack order can be changed based on which is the slowest card under the Reverse Speed ruleset, don't you think that it is possible that the attack order can be changed based on who has the strongest damage? Because many of the most powerful units in the game usually had a slower speed compared to others, but that also means that at most times, they will get defeated first without even having the opportunity to use their attack.

That is why 3 months ago, in my post about Some Ruleset Ideas I Like to Share, one of the modifiers that came to mind was a modifier based on that question.

Of course, I can't say that I was the first person to come up with the idea, and for all I know, the team has already got the concept of the modifier in mind and just waiting for the best opportunity to deploy it. But with the addition of this modifier, cards that may not have the best speed, but were pretty powerful, will have more opportunity to shine.

Brute Force in Action

In this battle, you can see that Venka the Vile was not the fastest unit among all the cards in the battle, but since Brute Force is active and it has the biggest damage among the cards, it gets the priority to attack first.

On the other hand, while Zyrx the Emberglaze has the least magic damage among all the present magic units, it was still able to attack first, because the modifier is based on the cards' strongest attack in case it happens that it has multiple attack types.

And even when Kelan Gaines is faster than Zarin the Scorch, it was still able to attack first because it has a higher rarity.

And that was the new modifier Brute Force, so that you do not have to worry about your strongest units not having the opportunity to attack. I find it most advantageous to use during high mana battles, and it can be compatible with the reworked Nidhoggr.

Now, the team should just remake Oshannus Unmade and give it Forcefield, so that we can see players throwing their keyboards, after seeing all those huge attack damage turn to 1 (Just kidding 😂).

Thank you, and see you on the next post!
