#151 Challenge: Creative Repurposing: "Turning an Old Denim overall Into a Trendy Tote/Sling Bag"

1000011841.jpg

Hello there Hivers! How are you all today? We have unpredictable weather nowadays. It's hot in the morning and it rains in the afternoon. As of writing, it's beginning to grow dark and rolling thunder is going on so I better stay put and do my DIY for this segment!

From an old overall to trendy Tote bag
1000011785.jpg

You know guys, believe it or not, I have been keeping this old overall for decades and I still kept it in my "treasury box". I have departed more than half of my remnants when we relocated yet this one remains.

1000011789.jpg

1000011796.jpg

1000011797.jpg

It's because the fiber is thick and durable and I like the pockets. The sling will automatically be used as the handle, right?

1000011798.jpg

All you need to do is fold the overall from the center.

1000011790.jpg

Draw a line for the base or bottom part.

1000011801.jpg

Then close it.

1000011804.jpg

1000011803.jpg

You need to make another angle at the end corner for the base.

1000011806.jpg

There it is! But that's not yet finished guys, I still need to make a lining to make it look neat inside and authentic.

The Lining

The lining will prevent the bag from tearing easily and it looks more presentable.

1000011805.jpg

I dug on my scraps again and looked for a thin cloth for the lining because the denim looked heavy already.

1000011809.jpg

1000011808.jpg

The patching. I need to sew it in double to make it durable because it might get easily get torn when you put more stuffs in there since it's a big one.

1000011824.jpg

1000011817.jpg

1000011821.jpg

We girls always carry along our "little beauty secrets" when we go to school, to the office or go malling so I don't forget to make a pocket for these items when I make bags to make the inside look orderly and organised.

1000011825.jpg

1000011827.jpg

The finishing touches.:)

1000011828.jpg

1000011830.jpg

1000011831.jpg

That's now my finished product. From decades of hoarding, it's now out in the open at last!

Thank you dropping by my page. This is my entry for today and I hope you like it and make your own tote bag too. Thank you @JustineParke and family for keeping this awesome community active.

Yes dear, recycling those old clothes would be more useful than storing it being out of fashion. Omitting this and that will be great. Try it! Thanks for dropping by.

WOOOW ! You've got the skills. The bag looks pretty cute. It is one of my desires and interests to sew. I hope to buy a sewing machine for myself. Ours is old and already broken.

Hi there! Yes, you can buy a new sewing machine if it's beyond repair. To have is a necessity especially if you have kids and you don't need to go to the shop for simple repairs. Actually, the old sewing machines are more durable compared to the new products. My sewing machine is still in good condition to date. Hubby brought this Brother sewing when the kids were still in their elementary grade and now they have already a family of their own.

See that. It looked worn out because I changed its color into brown and it's not a steel paint. Lol so it started to peel off. Anyways, it is a tough one. I guess I've already made millions since I got this doing all stuffs just to let both ends meet especially when hubby was on standby while awaiting for his next ship. I've made bags, school uniforms, curtains & drapes, gowns, band uniforms (package deals), etc. From the office, I sit on my sewing machine to receive orders like wallets and bags. Being self sufficient and not only relying on hubby's is a crown on my head.

Recycling is my forte too. Try it!

woww! that's one old bur gold. It's a vintage. There is a lot of history and memories about your sewing machine. It made lots for clothes. What a legend!

I agree with you. Wives must find ways to earn to help the family. Marriage is a team. I am a recycling person as well. I don't like wasting.

We have singer sewing machine before. I used it many times but my father gave it to his friend who owns a tailor shop. I also borrowed from my cousin which she isn't using anymore but i already returned it. I will definitely buy one soon.

There's nothing impossible if you're into it. I liked needlework since I was a kid you know then I was more inclined in sewing when we had sewing in our Home Economics subject in Grades 5 & 6 in elementary. The rest is history.

Wow, the sling bag is beautifully made! We have a lot of jeans that my mom stored from her younger days, I may try to learn sewing soon. :D

Yes dear, that's a good idea! Use the upper part as your shorts then use the lower part as your bag. I used to do that too. Timing uso din ang mini skirt non Kaya ginawa KO sya mini skirt with lots of embroidery stitches. Lol! Sometimes I would make a sack bag for my tennis racket too. Pag may sobra ginagawan KO pot holder

Yes dear, it comes handy when you don't need to be so formal with all your stuffs inside. My granddaughter used it this afternoon in going to school with her lappy
ang her small bag. She said it's a bag within a bag. The tote bag is big enough to accommodate her belongings. 😂
