As a novel, I found this work to be bad and the worst I’ve read so far—to the point that about two-thirds into the story, I actually considered whether it was worth continuing or not (and up until now, the only book I’ve started and never finished is The Silmarillion, though I do plan to give it another chance). Now, if I look at it as an essay on totalitarianism, I found it very good, if not excellent, although in any case, the work is extremely and unnecessarily long (the novel gets in the way of the essay). Also, unless it was an issue with the translation I read, the paragraphs themselves were often very long; I would have appreciated it if they had been shortened a bit, even if they were saying the same thing.
