What do you love about your city ?

What do you hate/dislike?

Temple City.jpg

Bhubaneswar, my city is the capital of Odisha, located in the eastern part of India is a very peaceful place for living. It's known as Temple City of India, because of many temples representing a very rich history of ancient Kalinga architecture and these iconic temples (few dating back to 650 CE) stand as a testament to our spiritual heritage. It's believed that, there used to be 7000 temples in ancient times, but not all of them have withstood the test of time - we still have around 700 temples - some of them being architectural marvels of ancient times. This year, I may have time to show them to you. Though Hindu population is major in the city, it's very much a religiously diverse city giving respect to everyone for a blissful living.

The thing that I love the most about my city, is the infrastructure - it's the second planned city of India, you will barely have a severe traffic congestion, as we have many parallel roads. During some special events, the city administration notifies the restrictions around few roads in advance, so you can always reroute, in case you have some critical travel plan. During recent times, the city has been beautified spending thousand of crores, making several public places and the wide roads more beautiful. I am sure, anyone who will come here for the first time will simply love the city.

The second thing I like the most about my city is the love for Food - our people are very fond of tasty foods and spend a lot on them. Any food start up that will serve nice food will be an instant success. And our people love to spend a lot in social functions, inviting many guests and serving them grand menu. It's like an opportunity for people to showcase their capability, and they go to extra mile. You have already seen few examples in my blog.

Jay Jagannath.jpg

The third best thing I like about my city is that it's just 60 km away from one of the best beaches of India - we often drive to Puri after lunch, the roads being 100 ft wide, we love the long drive. Spending few hours at the beach rejuvenates us and then going to the Jagannath Temple and eating Mahaprsad fulfills the day. I have also shown the beach few times as part of my blogs, you will fall in love with the golden beach, if you come and visit my place.

Overall life here is pretty peaceful and blissful if you have a decent earning. In general people here are very friendly, Lord Jagannath presiding over our hearts. Of course there are cheaters at every tourist place, but that's a common story everywhere.

Now coming to the down sides, I hate the rampant corruption resulting large amount of black money circulating in the market, skyrocketing the real estate price. It's either almost impossible to buy a flat or house, or you end up your whole life in repaying the loan. So far it has not been possible for me to buy a house in the city for this reason, but I don't regret about it, because my native is not too far, just 30 km away.

The previous government was very stable ruling the state for 4 terms (more than 20 years) and they could have developed the city to a much better place, but unfortunately, nothing significant happened to provide better income source to people except, most govt officials ending up being rich. When these govt officials are raided, they find a lot of money and properties, and then the story ends there - I wish, there were stricter rules to set a trend for younger generation officers. At times I feel like joining politics to bring a change, but that idea fades away quickly - we all know the reasons.

One other thing I dislike is the poor planning of long term policies or vision - we truly have massive potential, but the government does very little to truly improve the place - most of the money shown as spent only on papers, a large part of it going to pockets of babus involved. Slowly, there has been interest from big IT companies to establish their operation here, which is a good news. Hopefully in another 5-10 years, we will be a nice tier II IT city, providing better employment prospects to our kids.

Lastly I dislike the scorching heat of summer, which is rising year by year. When I was kid, this place was a cool city, I am talking about just 30 years back. Unfortunately increased population, massive increase of buildings , environment pollution have brought us here and no one has started to bother seriously about them yet. Hopefully electric vehicles will help a little, the educative society adopting them fast, but we need much more than that.

If you want to come to my place, then the best time will be Winter ( late October to end of February) - I am sure, you will love this place. We have several serene and scenic places to visit in the state at an affordable budget - I will be glad to help, should you need any guidance.

Hope I have shared more about my place as part of this post, to know it better. This post is in response to the Weekend-Engagement topics: WEEK 258, I would love to hear about your city/town, feel free to tag me when you write a blog.

Unfortunately too many politicians and government officials in all countries are corrupt. Their planning is often a joke, especially as after every election (roughly 4 years) they change party and policies!
Food is great and every Indian city and village I visited always had wonderful food to me.
The heat I can imagine getting worse as there is no doubt we have done alot of climate change damage etc!

Unfortunately too many politicians and government officials in all countries are corrupt.

And they have a legacy, it's impossible to join politics and get involved in governance, to bring a change.

It's good to know that your city doesn't have much traffic congestion; this one is really a big deal especially for commuters everyday. Food culture in your city is rich and celebrations are always done with lavish food preparation. Corruption is rampant here too and people are the ones suffering from the consequences. There are always pros and cons of living in a particular place; we just hope that more changes will happen for the benefit of all citizens.

BBSR is undoubtedly the best city of Odisha. Thanks to Otto Koensberg for beautifully planning this city. This city is also a neat and clean city, no distespect, but I would say this is even better than Kolkata. The only issue is that the outskirt of this city is growing rapidly and in an unplanned manner. In time those offshoots will become burden on BBSR.

Thank you.

There is no outskirt of the city now, it has almost grown till my native and on the other side till Cuttack. Wonder La is near my native, but they call it Bhubaneswar :)

You have a beautiful city 🌆. My nation is also facing challenges, we have selfish and corrupt politicians who are not willing to help the nation grow, all their interest is themselves.

Hello dear friend @sanjeevm, how are you?

These are the advantages I admire about a city: well-preserved buildings from ancient times, the food culture of each town, and the proximity to the beaches.

I also hate the corruption and ineffectiveness of governments in some areas.

Thank you very much for sharing the pros and cons of your city.

Have a happy and prosperous week.

Namaste 🙏 Sir, Your native place is the best in odisha , i was planning to visit there last year but unfortunately one of my friends who was also traveling with us and other friends from bilaspur chattisgarh was coming but at the last moment he quit due to some personal reason , so we all friends dropped the plan 😊.

I have done BCA from GG university bilaspur, so i loved that State. Also traveled to odisha by train while going native place .

Thanks 🤗

I've lived in a few cities over there years and I think they all have things that make you love them a bit and hate them a bit. I can't even imagine the heat you guys get there. I saw another post from a fellow in that part of the world and it made me start sweating just reading about the heat!

The heat is definitely painful, we almost restrict ourselves at home from 11 am to 3 pm - the hottest time of the day in this summer.

That's kind of sad, but I am sure it is necessary!

What I like most is the peace and tranquility in which we live, while the worst thing for me is that it involves something almost similar, since by living relatively far from the city we have to spend a lot of time getting to where we need to go to do our shopping or perhaps personal errands.

So basically, overpopulation has made the city hotter and dirtier right?
I think it's the same problem for every city. Migration is the problem. People are migrating to cities with better financial opportunities, so it causes high cost, overpopulation and population. I also hate this about the city suburbs where I live.

Exactly, population is the root cause of all the problems and no one even bothers to start talking about them - these politicians know it is a sensitive issue, and may backfire, no one is truly interested to make the living better.

Politicians will only discuss or pay attention to it when they stand to gain something. It's such a shame

I visited your place (or the region at least) in October a couple decades ago and it was the perfect time to visit. Exotic and fascinating to me.

What I like about my town is how it is a wonderful tangle of historic and new. Small and accessible but so much going on if you look closely. Safe and easy but enough people to not be devoid of risk and adventure.

A sleepy town with plenty of space in the winter. A vibrant tourist destination with an extra million visitors every year for some fun contrast.

Small and accessible matters a lot today to save some time for us.

The traffic in your city is what I don’t like
It’s like that here in Lagos too but I love how beautiful your city is

That does sound like a great place with some very sad problems. The heat could actually be mitigated by creation of green corridors, planting trees and other things. Most of the heat comes from grey-black buildings and pavements, the color absorbing the heat and letting it accumulate in the city. There are many concepts that are fairly easy to implement (e.g. painting rooftops white or "living roofs") that can reduce the heat stress in cities, but there has to be a political will to implement them.

Considering all, it does sound like a great place.

I love how life is peaceful over there
When I’m looking for I’m environment to live in, one of my highest considerations is living in a peaceful environment

Yes, the heat is becoming unbearable in many places now. We used to enjoy summer before, now it’s just pure sunburn 😩. Climate change is real.

Personally, I love everything about where I live, but the best thing is that we have water 24 hours a day, as well as the peace and quiet that comes with being away from traffic, and everything that entails.

I really like all the old buildings and the memorable history of my city, and when people come here to see all these things, we are very happy. And the mango of our city here are very famous and are sent all over the world.

I love everything about my city, especially that the businesses are close and I can walk there, as well as the green areas

What I liked from our town is huge parks and the beach!
What I disliked is poor planning, poor flood control, and undisciplined people throwing their trash anywhere.
