What are the three most important things to you personally, for leading a happy, meaningful and fulfilled life and why?

Duty, Discipline and Friendship - most important things of my life.

20250531_083053.jpg

A call came at 7 a.m. in the morning and my close friend asked me to join him for tea - I usually don't drink tea in the morning, but was ready in few minutes, that is when the lady came in asking - where are you going ? We have too many things to do today and then go for shopping as well. Well Pradosh called to join him for a tea party - that was my only answer. Rest she understands - Friends are given highest priority at our home, not only for me but for everyone in the family. Friends can come home any time, without asking, they can ask for anything - we all respect this relationship and enjoy, pretty much same like our childhood time. This is one thing, I value most and the family inherits that too - of course this happens with very close friends only, not for everyone. Without few good friends, life is meaningless, do you feel the same ?

But why ? They are the best medicine for stress management, there is no other better medicine invented yet. And I don't think, science or AI can invent anything better, in fact, it's decreasing fast. You have any issue, they will have an answer - the sense of belonging, the emotional support and encouragement to navigate through difficult times, instantly fixes all the negative effects, broadening our perspectives. Those who have some real good friends are privileged and know how to preserve them life time.

Next comes Duty - Duty fulfills our obligations, upholding ethical or moral values. I believe in that saying "Duty is God" - duty towards parents taking highest precedence - they are my living God. Then comes my family followed by the society we live in - if you want to do good, then you will find enough opportunities to contribute and live a fulfilling life, truthful to your consciousness. Taking care of parents and our immediate family is a life long commitment, that helps in putting the moral and ethical foundation for our kids - they learn from us by observing what we do - these things cannot be taught by books. There cannot be a better reason to justify, why we should do our duty, to lead a meaningful life.

To perform our duty to the best of our abilities, we need to stay healthy - physically and mentally and that is where the role of discipline comes. Leading a disciplined life brings in tremendous amount of self satisfaction and inner peace. Especially after forty, it directly contributes to our well being - one can feel and realize only after reaching that age. Mom definitely did a nice job, teaching us discipline from a very early stage - the best time to teach discipline to kids is the age between 5-15 - my all time favorite being the sloka from Chanakya :

"लालयेत् पंच वर्षाणि दश वर्षाणि ताडयेत्। प्राप्ते तु षोडशे वर्षे पुत्रं मित्रवदाचरेत्॥"

Pamper a kid with love and utmost care for the first five years, enforce strict discipline and teach moral values between 5-15 years and once they become 16 years, treat them like a friend.

These verses told 2375 years back (approximately), provides insights forever to achieve success, to lead a happy, meaningful and fulfilled life.

What are you thoughts on this topic ?

(1) Acceptance- Welcoming discomfort

(2) Integrity- Moral and logical consistency in both personal and professional life.

(3) Finding the golden mean in a complex society we are living in where we strike a perfect balance between two extremes and lead a flourishing life, where we can pursue our life with less difficulty and resistance, and interface with others easily.

This was such a warm and deeply reflective read. The way you've intertwined duty, discipline and friendship paints a beautiful picture of what truly matters in life. I especially loved how you spoke about friendship being the best medicine for stress , so true. Real friends do bring that sense of belonging that no technology or therapy can replicate.

In the same way, we should be loyal to our work. If we remain loyal to our work, then that is our benefit Not only will we get progress, but we will also feel good about doing our work and we will want to do more work.

Real friends are becoming rare thing here in the west, mostly its just fake face friends that will drop or disappear after a while or when school is over, I'm glad you got good ones

Excellent afternoon

A wonderful way of looking at the good life, I agree with you: duty, friendship, and discipline are part of having peace of mind in everything we set out to do.
Discipline is fundamental to me in everything we choose to do, even if it's just a simple meal to share.
Friendship, as you say, is not something everyone has. Those childhood friendships that last are wonderful, regardless of the lifestyle they have.
Duty is something very healthy. When we say it is our duty to do something, it must be respected.

I loved the way you expressed it.

Best regards

The most important thing is to be able to share pleasant moments and not so much with the family who are always there at the same time. For me, being able to share with nature, in a few words, being free.

For me, Loyalty, Solidarity and Commitment, but Loyalty is non-negotiable. Whoever helps you in the darkest and most difficult moments, our duty is to be there also in case you need anything.

I really appreciate your insightful post. I think you pillars of duty, discipline and friendship make for a strong foundation for life. Duty is what ties us to our family and community, discipline gives us the power to do what is right, and friendship alleviates the pressure. My family growing up had a similar approach to friends always being welcome at our home, I think it helped us to grow closer with our friends, and also to share some of that connection with our family, like we were all a big extended family. I also appreciated the verse you shared on raising a child, as I think this is sound wisdom, which I will need soon as I am starting my own family.

Excuse me for going back a whole week @sanjeevm, hopped over to your blog and spotted this one. Ancient but timeless wisdom, so precious, the very best advice for any parent!

Pamper a kid with love and utmost care for the first five years, enforce strict discipline and teach moral values between 5-15 years and once they become 16 years, treat them like a friend.

Have a great Friday @sanjeevm <3
