Overheat but saved in time

The sixth sense rescued me.

1.jpg

Everything was working nice, when I went to bring the kid from one of the exam, the AC was working, inside temperature was nice, and all of a sudden the cool air stopped. Along with the boy, I was also carrying two of his friends, as their parents delegated me the task. Everyone could feel the heat in few minutes, as outside now is like a frying pan. I told them not to panic and have patience, as we were not far away from home. We switched off the AC as it was not working anyways, and managed with the hot air from outside for few minutes.

After we reached and parked the car in our garage, I turned off ignition, and that is when things looked more suspicious. A fan inside the engine was still running, with clear audible sound and that was alarming. I could not figure out why the fan would run, even after the engine is turned off, and key pulled out, so I opened the bonnet and now the sound was even clear. Looking closely, there was some slippage of oil like stuffs on the front grill - touching them did not feel like it was water. Called one of my service supervisor where I give the car on a regular basis and he explained it nicely - when the engine is overheat, the fan runs on its own, to cool it down. There is a sensor that controls that fan - it will stop automatically, after the engine is cooled off, so just leave it like that for half an hour and it should stop by then.

And what next ? It never happened earlier, what could be the reason ? He answered, you should take it a nearby service station and not send to me ( as its very far) and they will have to determine the cause and fix. Driving the car in this state for long distance is very dangerous - it may catch fire even. Hopefully you have minimized the risk of significant damage by sensing it early. God, you saved me......I was whispering.

I did not try to drive the car that day, and on the very next day, took it to a nearby service station. On inspection, the radiator was found to be damaged. They have pretty standard way of operation, so I left the car with them and came back and they kept updating me on regular intervals, by creating a whatsapp group and sharing the progress. . Since it was at a authorized garage, I did not have to worry.

Earlier people used to repair radiators, but now a days, repair shops are almost extinct. They did not have a new one in their stock, and had to procure it from another place so asked to keep the car for more time. As the yearly maintenance service was also due, I told them to complete everything at one go.

On arrival of the new radiator, they sent this video to show me the proof. The new looks nice, isn't it ?

After everything was completed, they still wanted to keep it for another night for observation, to make sure there is no slippage of coolant. I was OK with it as now I am going to run it for another year without any worries.

Have you faced overheat issue any time ? It was a new learning for me, and the kid as well - he now knows what to do.

You were so lucky and did the right thing to stop quickly. I'm glad it could get fixed reasonably quickly but even better than that, by people who know what they're doing.

This is such a relatable story as It started off like a normal day, then suddenly turned into a stressful situation with the AC and engine. I like how calm you stayed, especially with kids in the car. Your quick thinking and that "sixth sense" really helped prevent something worse.

It’s also great that the service station kept you updated. it shows how good customer care can make a big difference. I'm happy that everything ended well and you learned something new, too.

I'm glad nothing serious happened and you were able to get home safely.

Great that the car is now repaired and your vehicle is running smoothly, without any issues.

Have a great day, dear friend @sanjeevm

Yes, had it happened on a long trip, we would have gone through more difficulties.

good choice. i remember, one car i had before, it overheated and i still drove it more till it seized. From then on I carried a bottle of oil and know better than to drive it for long after a check engine light comes..

Overheating is a very serious and emergency condition
I’m happy that you acted fast and it looks like the repairers did a good job on it

If in that video you can see the big differences between both radiators, my friend, and well, he was very lucky to realize it in time.

the calmness and intelligence you used to solve these problems is appreciable.

It's good to have detected the radiator problem in time, my friend. You were really lucky because it could have been a much worse accident. At the same time, as you say, it's a learning experience for everyone, even for us, to always be alert because the car gives us signals and sometimes they are ignored for different reasons.

I'm really glad you were lucky enough to get the right shop! Some places would do a bad job just to see you return to spend more.

Some places would do a bad job just to see you return to spend more.

That is why I usually prefer authorized service stations, we can always circle back with them, and reach to their management, if they don't do it right.

Ehi!! 😳 Thank God you were smart enough! This would have been a terrible disaster if you didn't responded on time. Please, accept my sympathy. Regards to the kids

And thankfully it happened when we were nearby, otherwise, its a big problem, as the vehicle has to be towed.

Glad you acted quickly! It's also great how the garage kept you updated through WhatsApp—love that.

How much did it cost? I think it's not really cheap to fix the radiator

The radiator cost is around 4.2k and fixing was another 400, so total 4.6k INR.

Glad to hear it’s all sorted! Keeping it overnight was a smart move. Overheating can be scary, but it’s great that the kid learned from it too. I could remember when I had my first experience with vehicle overheating, it was very scary that day.

Yes, not knowing and facing it is definitely scary for the first time.

I’m happy you solved it but that must have costed you a lot of money…

Ya, but that's one time, I always try to keep the vehicle in nice condition, so that it does not disappoint me on longer trips.

It's been a long long time since I had to replace a radiator! I had an old car when I was younger that overheated and left me standing on the side of the road hoping someone would stop and help me. It was not fun! I'm glad you got yours fixed.

Thankfully it happened near to house, I can imagine, getting stranded on a road side would have been painful.

Fortunately, nothing serious happened, my friend, because I imagine that the temperatures to which they were subjected could have caused greater damage.

I am actually happy that there was nothing serious that really happens to it.
