I genuinely helped but got criticism

avatar

People never understand what it takes to build a garden and still give negative feedback whereas I genuinely helped but got criticism for none of my fault.

20251010_110629.jpg

The garden that I built up last year was spoiled by the society but they wanted to start gardening on the other side park this year, after a gap of more than five years. They sought my opinion to shape up the garden and the very first thing I told them was to improve the soil quality by adding cocopit, vermi compost, but they were unwilling to spend money on that. They also requested me to bring saplings and they were very specific on getting seasonal yellow inca saplings, which is barely available.

20251010_105623.jpg

So I looked out at all my known nurseries and one fine day while coming from another work, got to know that yellow inca saplings are available but only one tray, consisting more than 100 plants.

20251010_105637.jpg

Given that the weather was not favorable this season, there was high demand and since I got the opportunity, I brought one full tray for our society, after getting confirmation on phone.

20251010_114615.jpg

I told them to plant these saplings only after improving the soil condition, because these saplings would survive for long time. Unfortunately by the time I came back from another work, they already started planting them on hard soil. And the next day, the new gardener went ahead and planted all of them. He has no idea about plants and was just a simple daily wage labor, before joining here at somebody's recommendation. Seeing the pathetic state of the soil, I spent my own money and time, to provide organic fertilizers ( like seaweed, fish oil etc) to these plants, spraying insecticides every week. It's as if I am their half gardener, which I do only because I am a plant lover and would love to see a garden with flowers. The person in charge yesterday came in, when we were spraying the insecticide and told us, the plants are not growing very healthy. Probably I brought wrong saplings, he wanted to plant some other variety which would grow in bushes. There is no such variety in inca - that was my answer, but then he tried to defend his own thoughts, without much knowledge. You cannot have very healthy plants in hard soil - look at my pots, I have been improving the soil quality every year, since last ten years. The soil has become gold class and only then plants would grow healthy - basic or fundamental knowledge that one should have, if being involved in gardening.

So you can probably imagine, how heartbroken I was - spending so much time, money, effort and now you are criticizing me, without any effort. I am no longer buying saplings for them anytime in future - lessons learnt. Sometimes life teaches us in hard ways - learn from that and move on.....

I will still care these plants this season - because I have done everything so far. These people want to take credit, with which I am fine - I don't need credit for my work - my satisfaction lies somewhere else. I will share the growth in couple of weeks and probably you guys can judge.

In societies there is all this drama. I can correlate with you as most people in the society are drama themselves and don't know what they are doing and just play with words.. I can see all your hard work and the pictures you post of your garden and you working speaks for itself.. Just ignore these people.. Cheers

Just ignore these people

Yes, don't want to take negative vibes, but lessons learnt for future.

That sucks, but it sounds like it is time you cut your losses and just moved on. It's too bad they don't have community garden plots there like they have in some places here. Then you could call it your own and do whatever you wanted with it.

Thanks for sharing this… I learned something about gardening today :)

But I have to be upfront with you… I’m annoyed by how they reacted toward you. It feels like they took you for granted, and I really don’t like that kind of behavior. :(

Still… your dedication shows, and I look forward to seeing how the plants grow. 🌱💚

Yes, me too, people love to talk and take credit, without any effort.

Even after all the hard work, you didn’t give up, and I really liked seeing that. It taught me a lesson too, because I also lose hope quickly when people don’t appreciate me .Watching you made me realize that we should keep trying.

I can feel your frustration. It’s tough when you put so much effort into something good and still get criticism.

That really is sad, and unfair, but unfortunately very common. So many people take help and expertise for granted, without any consideration of that it should be reciprocal. Even more, when you don't want any credit for your work, but just see the plants flourish and become beautiful - and their negligence and resistance against good advice puts even that in jeopardy.

I've been in that position many times, and now I carefully select when I help, and when not.

I will do that going forward, it was a lesson learnt.

It's too bad that they don't take your advice to correct and nurture the soil. That is the most important part of the ecosystem. So sad about the saplings, :-(

I'm very sorry for the criticism but I'm can see for sure that you tried your best, well done

The hardest thing in farming isn't the soil or the weather it's dealing with people who want results without understanding or effort.

It's a sad story, you do their work, you put effort and they criticized... It's easier to be critical than do effort and do something good like you do

I congratulate you for wanting to do things right to have healthy plants and a beautiful garden. But I understand that sometimes it's not easy to agree when there are people who don't know what they're talking about and are stubborn.
I hope the pine trees you planted grow strong. I'd like to know where they're from.
Thank you very much for sharing your experiences.
Best regards @sanjeevm

It's truly incredible, my friend, that you want to help and give your opinion, since you have the necessary knowledge for gardening work, and your neighbors tell you that you made a mistake bringing the plants.

There's always a lesson to be learned in life, and perhaps you've learned it, especially about wanting to take credit for the plants. But hey, everyone has their own beliefs. Most people know that you're the one who's truly been at the forefront, so good for you for not worrying or getting upset about the malicious comments from some of your neighbors.

In my little knowledge, I’ll want you to keep your fingers crossed and wait for the outcome of the plants
A lot of people always try to play smart after you must have helped them
It is clear that the whole community wants him as their gardener so just keep watching

They will definitely come back to you

Well, some people don't know to appreciate help. It's better not to do good deeds at times. But it still depends.

Your frustration is completely understandable. You put genuine effort into improving the garden, working through poor soil and mixed knowledge among the group, yet ended up facing criticism instead of appreciation. It’s disheartening when dedication is met with negativity, and stepping back sounds like a healthy way to protect your energy. I hope the project continues to grow, even if you’re no longer the one nurturing it.

Gardening requires extra effort, and you got it really good. Everyone can’t keep up, and they all have excuses and blame.
Hope they dont intentionally cross your way to bother you next time.

What you have done is truly impressive and I really appreciate your dedication and heart for gardening. It is clear that you do bot just see plants as decoration, you care deeply about their well being, even when others do not understand the effort involved.

Your effort truly stands out:

You noticed that the soil was poor and insisted on improving it before planting.
You went out of your way (spending your own money and time) to bring in organic fertilizers like seaweed and fish oil. That is not easy or cheap. You have been consistent in caring for those saplings.

Even when you were criticized, you did not walk away completely. You said you will still care for the plants this season. That commitment is admirable.

Finally, your approach is not just about making things look pretty; you are building a healthier ecosystem. I am currently residing in a city where everythong is just surrounded by smog and cemented. What you are doing is remarkable! Huge respect from the base of my heart!
