Image designed by @schamangerbert

Hey guys,

I played the HiveChess Tournament yesterday. We had a total of 27 players participating in the event, and not surprising, @maestroask was the winner. He finished with 62 points, while @poseout87 finished second with 50, and @dakods finished third with 33 points. This round, the gap between 3rd place, 4th, and 5th was a difference of 2 points. You can see the full summary in my report post here

This post is to highlight some of my own personal games.

I played a couple of interesting games against @jaki01, @migmag, @rosmarly and also a stubborn loss due to bad play against @southgamer

Jaki(0) vs ZGM_Samostically(1)

1. Nc3 d5 2. e4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6

The Caro-Kann is one opening I enjoy playing, especially when I am looking for an aggressive setup, as seen in this game. One good thing about playing against white's two-knight setup is the attacking setup black can explore with h5 when white castles early.

image.png

h5!
My first venture moves towards launching an attack against white's king.

image.png

Neg4!!

This is the move that brought me a win in this game.
hxg4 cannot work because it opens up the h-file for my rook, and do not forget that there is a bishop and queen battery filed on the h2-b8 diagonal.

image.png

I did not stop there. I went further with a bishop move into the position, checking the white king, and once the king moves away from the check, I will bring my bishop to f5, so I can hit on his queen on my next move and threaten a checkmate at the same time.

image.png

Now it is all over in this position since the queen will have to go to stop the checkmate. But Jaki saved his queen and got checkmated.

Zgm_Samostically(1) vs Migmag(0)

1. e4 b6 2. Nc3 Bb7 3. Bc4 e5 4. Nf3

image.png

The Owen defense is what this position is called. It feels like something related to the Pirc defense, but this time, black played e5 quite early, and that changes the balance of the game.

d6 5. d4 Nf6??

image.png

Black blunders very early in the game. Dropping the e5 center pawn and the possibility of dropping the f7 pawn as well after the queens are traded off the board.

image.png

In this position, I went for Qe,2, which drops my advantage. A better response was Nxe5 Bxe5, Bxf7 Kxf7, and then my knight moves to g5 forking the black king and the black bishop on e4.

image.png

Nxf7 still got played on the board, but this time, black is in a whole lot of trouble. The black queen is under attack, the black rook as well, and the black king is under check from my white queen.

image.png

Be7 to obstruct the check is a blunder because the queen drops on the next move, thanks to the white knight on f7.

image.png

After castling long and my queen check on d6, it was obvious the game was already over because the checkmate is unavoidable at this point.
