Movie Review: Tulsa King
Hey guys,
This week, I started a new series called Tulsa King. At first glance, seeing it was Sylvester Stallone who happens to be the lead character, I became interested in what the TV show would be all about. I have known him since his early movies, like Rambo and Creed, and I would say that as he gets older, he becomes more reserved, not acting in as many films, probably only in the ones that he finds interesting.
Tulsa King is about a Mafia chapo named Dwight Manfredi, who gets 25 years in prison for a crime and serves his time fully despite different offers from the FBI to become a snitch and rat out his mafia family. This shows how loyal to character his to his mafia family, even down to the point that it affects his actual family. He gets separated from his daughter, and at some point in his sentence, he refuses his family from coming to see him in prison.
A captivating interest for me in this show is Dwight's style of leadership. It is different from all other mafia or criminal bosses. He is interested in the betterment of his crew, how they can evolve as well as individuals. He did not come with the mindset that I am in charge, so you all listen to me. Instead, he comes with enlightenment, making them understand they can do things for themselves as well, and the importance of loyalty not just to themselves but to the crew as well. If you got my back, then I have yours covered as well.
Even though he got banished from the Italian Mafia and sent away on exile to the city of Tulsa in Oklahoma, he did not take it as a huge setback for himself; rather, he saw it as an opportunity to build something of his own away from the Mafia gang in New York. Arriving in Tulsa, what Dwight does first in the city is very funny. He goes to a cannabis store where he meets the owner of the business, then basically convinces him to offer protection to the owner's cannabis business in exchange for a weekly pay. He achieves this through his convincing sales skills and his understanding of human behaviour and wants. This partnership between Dwight and the cannabis business owner later moves on into a profitable partnership that leads to other businesses.
Manfredi did not just stop there. He developed an interest in human beings, and the people of that city turned him into a top earner in that city, moving on to owning a casino, bar, strip club, restaurant, and good profit from the weed business expansion. His leadership in the movie is what I admire most about the Manfredi character. The way he deals with issues upfront, teaching his crew members how to handle certain tasks and giving them a piece of the action as well. Through his 25-year jail sentence, Manfredi knew that loyalty is what keeps the business affair running, and a problem for one is a problem for all.
Don't even get it twisted that Dwight Manfredi might be old, so he would not have any love interests; rather it is a different case. Despite his age, he gets entangled in a love triangle between two beautiful ladies. One of them I liked her for him, while the other was not too sure what would come out of the relationship, and like most times, I was right, nothing much there. If you are a fan of mob drama, like Mobland, Power, The Sopranos, and TV shows like these, I strongly recommend Tulsa King.
