Good at one, Bad at another.

The philosophy of the yin-yang, the Chinese philosophy that represents the complementary interconnectedness of the universe. Just something simple I like to look at as opposing sides that attract. I came across this philosophy through the animated series, The Avatar: The Last Airbender, when I first watched it a couple of years back for the first time.

You know the ending of the first season at the Northern water tribe, and two fish were used to represent the spirits. It also represents the yin-yang philosophy since one fish was white, representing light, and the other fish was dark, representing darkness. The co-existence of both fish symbolizes the interconnectedness between light and dark.

All that is not all that I grab from this yin-yang talk and symbols. Through deep thinking and having some moments of solitude with my soul today. I pondered upon the idea that what if yin-yang is not limited to just those fish in Avatar. What if it cuts across so much more beyond that? A thought got me reflecting on the idea that it could also mean there is a presence of good and bad, all coexisting. It is like saying: two truths can coexist.

A typical example would be two individuals having an argument over a specific number. On one end, the number is six, and on the other end, the number is 9. Now this is a kind of argument that can go on for a long time, but here is the thing: both are actually true. A number can be six and also be nine. Therefore, making it two truths coexisting at once. It only depends on the angle you are looking at it.

I would even go all out on a leap and say that yin-yang is also about being good at one thing and being bad at another. This will explain why I can do one thing, but when it comes to another thing, I become very bad at it. I am no grandmaster, but I can say I have a decent understanding of how to play the game of chess. So we will take this as being good at one thing, and when it comes to singing, I am not all that fancy or Michael Bolton-like.

I genuinely admire those who can sing or those who have a really nice voice, and not just the ladies alone; there are guys who sing so well. But when I sing, it is a whole different story. I have to admit that I do not know where the voice comes from. Now, this is what it means to be bad at another thing.

I can play chess, but I cannot sing, even though I enjoy good music. I guess that is the balance that life comes with. Like we were not given the manual script for navigating our way through the hurdles of the world, that is how it's okay to be good at one and be bad at another.

I even have a theory that what if it is being bad at another is what makes life what it is, because if I were all good at every time I get myself involved in, I would not have much regard for life itself. I would have little to nothing that grabs my interest in this world. Think about it, if you were good at everything. What would you value?

Being bad at another thing could be what makes good moments and memories. It is the bad singing that makes the karaoke singing with friends all fun. I cannot count the number of times my friends and I have spoiled the lyrics to beautiful songs with our atrocious voices while playing chess.

Appreciate your strength and embrace your weakness. That is what makes us human after all.

I am @samostically. I love to talk and write about chess because I benefited a lot from playing chess, and I love writing about chess.

This is beautiful.
You have said the truth, Sam. We cannot be good at everything and bad at everything, too. Life won’t make much meaning and interesting if there’s nothing to entice or interest us, especially when we see others doing great at something we aren’t good at. Just like you said, it is in those things we are bad at that makes up good memories with others. Embracing our strengths and weaknesses will do us good than trying to fit in everything.

Yes my friend. I really wish I could sing or have a decent voice at the very least. But the fact that I can't sing makes me want to sing with joy instead of watching and paying attention to the beat like good singers do all the time.

Thanks for reading my post. It's really means a lot to me. I actually really enjoyed writing this.

You are right. Many of us wish for something others find so easy to do but again, we also have that one thing we are good at and others are wishing they could. That’s life and the different talents we all have that make life fun. For the singing, you can actually sing to give you joy even if you don’t have to be on a stage doing that. In all, doing what brings happiness to us is important and as long as it gives us that pleasure and joy, it doesn’t matter what others say.

Appreciate your strength and embrace your weaknesses. That's what makes us human. That's what makes the best friendships and relationships. The knowledge that we're not perfect in everything. So, while your friend gets to praise your dexterity in drawing, he also gets to laugh at how terrible your jokes you are. That's what makes humanity beautiful. How perfect our imperfections are.

Most exquisite post, Sam.🩷

It’s all about the balance and perspective. To some, what is bad is good and to others, what is good is bad and there are different factors that can affect this at different times.

Well said, Sam.

Some thoughts for you to ponder, Sam.

What if that bad cannot exist without the good? Think of it in terms like this -- we appreciate good because we know the bad.

The Yin Yang is one of my favourites -- for every good reaction there is also an equal opposite reaction.

It also ties in nicely with Newton's third law of motion.

Thanks for your comment! Yes you're spot on. It's not just about opposition, I see interdependence too.

It also ties in nicely with Newton's third law of motion.

every reaction creates an equal and opposite reaction. I like how you tied it into Newton’s third law, too. I never really thought about it considering I’m a science student. Now, It makes me think that even in physics, balance is a constant truth. If every action creates a reaction, and maybe life works the same way. So for every ying, there is a Yang somewhere! Sounds cooler 😎

See, the reason why life is so beautiful is because of diversity. The difference is what makes life worth living. Not having it all figured out and then figuring it out as you go. The joys that come with insight and the benefits that come through experience. So yeah, from one perspective, it would all be on a tight rope with very little room for creativity or growth. Once we see that we are who we are (with our Yins and Yangs), it all falls into place.

I'm still studying your ying and yang. I'd update you later. Thanks for stopping by.

I don’t think about things like good and bad so much because they are so charged and skewed by our own understandings. Yin and yang are much easier concepts for me to deal with, the balance of two forces is something we can look at with less judgement, and as you said yin and yang are about this balance.

As I understand, “Good” would be neither yin nor yang, but a healthy balance of both, a harmonious flow between whatever polarity exists. And “Bad” would be the two polarities fighting against each other. Think of a baby being born, neither the sperm or the egg is bad. If one destroyed the other maybe you could call that bad if you want 🤣 I picked a ridiculous example but I think it works well.

Yang is outward Yin is inward. Yang is a protector Yin is a nurturer. Yang is thought and Yin is emotion. And actually inside the yang is a yin and yang and inside the yin is a yin and yang 😝 A fractal. 🤯 I could talk about this all day

Now this is a twisted philosophy. I understand then I don't 😂😂😀. I'd probably have to read it over and over again to untwist it. But I'm glad you stopped by.

Yang is outward Yin is inward. Yang is a protector Yin is a nurturer. Yang is thought and Yin is emotion. And actually inside the yang is a yin and yang and inside the yin is a yin and yang

Have you read The Art of war?

This sounds like something Sun Tzu would say.

When two different people look at things from different perspectives, it is okay. The only difference will then be when both are made to view it from the same perspectives and they still end up having different agreements.

One thing is certain about yin yang, they don’t blend. They are two separate things that are easily differentiated. And yes, it cuts across different aspects of our lives. Our ability to know how to apply things like this is what makes everything balanced.

As they say, nothing is completely bad and completely good. But when it’s not well applied, it becomes a problem.
