Chess News: FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 so far

After writing about the Hive chess International Master Playing in the world stage, I’ve decided today to write a bit more about the event.

The ongoing Fide Grand Swiss has been filled with action, with a lot of big names making the headline news for their victories and others making it for their losses. One of India's female chess grandmasters, Divya Deshmukh, took down Africa's highest-rated chess player, GM Amin Bassem, and that is not all. The current chess world champion, also from India, Gukesh Dommaraju, lost to the youngest player to become a chess grandmaster, Abhimanyu Mishra, at the age of 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days back in 2021.

So far, one player who has been on a pretty strong performance is the German chess grandmaster, Matthias Bluebaum. He had an impressive start with two draws, then a three-game streak of wins until round 5 and 7, when he took down India's strongest grandmasters, one after another, first, Praggnanandhaa, and next Erigaisi Arjun, a competitive contender for the trophy.

@stayoutoftherz and @jaki01, this might put a smile on your faces.

The second player to look out for in the open section is Nihal Sarin from India, who is currently in second place and tied up on the same 5.5 points with GM Matthias Bluebaum. After 7 rounds of playing, they are currently the only two tied on the same number of points, but there are still four more rounds to go. That is more than enough for a whole lot to happen in a chess tournament. Sarin's last game was quite impressive as he defeated the grandmaster from Iran, Parham Maghsoodloo, to join the lead.

In the women's section, Vaishali Rameshbabu is the lady you want to talk to or talk about. She is ahead of the pack with 6 points and is currently in first place. Her performance in getting to this point has been truly impressive, with 5 wins and only two draws. This goes to show how strong she is and how India has cracked the code in this game called chess. I must say it is quite an admirable thing for the Rameshbabu family, having two grandmasters, Pragnanandhaa and Vaishali, and not just any grandmasters, but two siblings who are competing on the world stage. If I were a parent like Mr and Mrs Rameshbabu, I promise you my family and friend group will get tired of me telling them that my children are grandmasters.

The second female chess player doing well in the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 is Lagno, Kateryna. She is a Russian chess grandmaster, but currently plays under the FIDE flag. She has four wins and three draws, which is just one more draw ahead of Vaishali, which is why she is in second place and only half a point behind Vaishali. I can tell you for sure that Kateryna will give Vaishali a run for the trophy, given the fact that they have not met in the tournament and a high chance that they might just meet in the next round, since they are currently the two players with the highest points.

With her previous records of winning the women's blitz championship, women's rapid championship, and contending for the world championship, in the 2018 match final, where she lost to Ju Wenjun, I can tell you for sure, Katerya Lagno is a formidable opponent to beat for anyone who wants to win the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 women's section.

Lastly, it has been tough on Nigeria's International Master, Tennyson, as he is the lowest-rated player in the open section, and he has only gotten a draw from the Uzbekistan grandmaster Abdisalimov Abdmalik. For sure, it was going to be a tough one for him, but he knew the risk and what was ahead for him. However, how can you become better without playing against the best?

The world chess champion losing three games in a row says how tough this tournament is. Tennyson has already achieved a lot in getting the opportunity to play these players.
