Another Hivechess Arena, Another Lesson, No Top 3

"If your opponent cannot do anything active, then don’t rush the position;
instead you should let him sit there, suffer, and beg you for a draw”

(Jeremy Silman)

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to another Hivechess tournament report of mine. This Friday's Hivechess was a good one. Almost felt like the event is becoming similar in results. @maestroask winning the event with a 100% win rate - Every other player battles every friday for the second and third spots in the podium. Congratulations to Castro and @Sirtetris for finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

My Story

I lost just two games in the tournament, but just like last friday, I had to pull out due to my coaching schedule. I planned to make my games count before then however, my internet made matters worse. I'd look at a game from the tournament and later in the week, I'd do a hive chess study on another game.

Yeah, I hate d4 positions especially when I'm trying to win quickly, so I went with 1.e5 - the Euglund Gambit. The aim is to go down a pawn and develop quickly. But my opponent played very nicely with Bf4 and made it a bit tricky.

After Qe7, black is down a pawn but plans to castle long and play quickly on the d file

As tricky as this position looks, white is better, and my opponent player the best move here Qe2!

White was clearly winning but blundered in the next move with Bc4! - making black straight up better

As black I played that move and was better for most part. But white held the position and even with my clock running out, it was a bit difficult for me to find an easier way to win.

Later my internet started lagging and eventually I flagged. Was a good game and I enjoyed the opening phase. You can follow the game with the full pgn here.

Finished 9th position and most of my games were pretty much okay but I was unable to play enough games and my performance wasn't so great. Till next Friday.
