The needed help

Greetings!

One thing I have got to know about this life is that, no one can live his or her life alone. There will be times we will need the help of others.

Sometimes ago, when I gained admission into the university, I had nothing and also, my parents were not also buoyant, but even at that, they would not want to ask people for help as they considered it a thing of shame. This was the situation with me back then and I was on the verge of not making it to the university due to our financial status and my parents' attitudes to seeking help from their friends and relatives.

So, on a particular day, I took my dad's phone and scrolled down his contact list. Thank God he's always free with us. Though he would not want to be embarrassed for asking for help, at atleast, he's free with us and we can play with his phone at will. So, like I was saying, I took his phone and scrolled down his contact list and there I saw a foreign number that belonged to one of his friends, Mr Joe. So, since I knew he's not willing to ask for his friend's help, I went behind his back without informing him and sent a text message to the man telling him name and my needs.

So, after I had sent the message, the man upon receiving the message called back directly to my dad's phone and asked him about what was going on. When my dad answered the call, he was a little bit confused, but the man narrated everything in the message to him and that's how my dad got to know that I was the one that sent the message to his friend.

Immediately he got to know I was the one and upon dropping his phone, he came to me with anger written over his face and gave me a dirty slap. “Why did you have to message him?” he asked. “Do I look like someone in need?” He asked. “Never in your life do that again.” he said. “Yes sir, I will not do that again,” I replied.

So, that was what transpired after the call and this really got to me, but at the same time, I understand my dad's plight and decision, but thank God I did what I did that day as my action though not good enough saved my educational pursuit from being delayed or denied.

The man whom I sent a text message to really took my matter up and paid all my university bills from the start to the end and now, I'm now a graduate and a beneficiary of help that comes from an open mouth. Had it been I have closed my mouth and acted like my dad, I wouldn't have benefited from the man's kindness.

This is my entry to the hiveghana weekly prompt.

Thanks for reading.

I know right! I wonder what would have happened if you closed your mouth. This is definitely a great lesson for everyone.
