The needed educational changes

Greetings!

The word education is a very deep word and this is because of what it stands for. When talking about education, we must know that its connection with life and anything that has a connection with life should not be taken for granted.

No wonder we were told that,”education is the best legacy.” Yes, indeed, education is the best legacy. It's a legacy that cannot die or go into extinction no matter the situation. But the question is, are we improving on the legacies brought by education? This is the question we should all ask ourselves.

So, in proffering the answer to the above question, I would say that we are not doing well when it comes to making education take its place in building our future and future generations. Though the word education is not limited to the formal educational setting alone, we also have the informal aspect of education. But one thing I strongly believe in is that, both the formal and the informal can't be neglected or done with. In fact both work together to prepare students for life and to work in the modern world.

Though, I would be leaning towards the formal type of education in this my write up, but I would not even talk less of what contributions the informal education can contribute to make the formal education work for students in preparation for their lives journey.

When talking about informal education, it has to do with our traditional way of educating ourselves which has to do with our cultural beliefs and cultural practices. Also, it has to do with our moral beliefs towards learning. Though this type may not be within the four corners of the classroom, the skills learnt from it have always helped us to exploit the work. This skill includes local trading, crafting and so on.

So, going by this and for us to make our education worthwhile, we have to inculcate part of our informal educational system into the formal one and when this is done, then the result would come. Though, some of these things have in one way or the other crept into our formal education system.

So, to start with, our formal educational system of today has not been really helping students as it ought to be and for us to get the students prepared for the task ahead, there must be improvement in the our educational system and for us to get the best result, there must be total overhauling of our outdated educational curriculum.

To some extent, our curriculum is not helping us at all. As we all know that the world is evolving, we also should try and build an evolving curriculum so as to prepare students for the future that lies ahead of them.

So, in the building of this new curriculum, one thing that should be put into consideration is practical over theory. In practice, there would be better learning and implementation than theory. Though, most of our professional courses in the university are always doing practical, but don't let me lie to us, this their practical is not as thorough as it supposed to be and that's one of those things affecting the students to perform creditably well after being employed to perform what they have studied for years in the school.

I have heard of many medical practitioners not being up to task. I have heard a story about a doctor that forgot scissors inside a woman after an operation at the theatre. We have also heard about pharmacists administering wrong medications to patients and so on. So, this is really affecting students to meet up with the demand of the modern word. And for us to curb this menace, there should be a practical curriculum in place rather than the outdated theoretical curriculum being used now.

Also, like I said earlier that the informal educational system should be imbibed in the formal one, I would also suggest here that informal skills acquisitions should be inculcated into our educational system. Though, some of the institutions in my part of the word are already into it. But for us to prepare the students for life and make them meet the demand of the modern world, this skill acquisition of a thing should not be on a part time or optional basis, but should be mandatory and compulsory. By doing so, there would be informal skills development in our educational system which would help us to prepare our students for life and the task ahead in this competitive world. So, the informal skill acquisition should also be in our educational curriculum.

Finally, for us to have a better future and also prepare the students for life after school, there must also be a serious reading culture among the students. The reading culture should be resuscitated and when this is done, the students would learn more about their fields and this would prompt them to make success in the chosen field. Remember that, “readers are leaders.”

So, all the mentioned above are the various ways and means of preparing the students ahead for the future and also for the modern world.

This is my entry to the hiveghana weekly prompt.

Thanks for reading.
