The girl I want to marry

In most cases, one thing that's not reciprocal is love. It's possible for me to love a person and for the person not to love me back, vice versa.

So, if there's one thing that does not normally beget itself, then that thing should be love.

It all started when I was in my 200 level in the university that I found a lady called Ife. Ife, a yoruba lady with so much beauty was my crush and I love her so much.

At first, we started as friends and we were very close as we were studying the same course, English nand and Education from the same faculty of education.

Everyone back then knew that both of us were best of friends, it even got to a stage that a friend of mine named Ayo came to my hostel and asked me saying,

“Sam, are you sure you and Ife are still on the friend level or you have approached her and asked her out?” “no, we are just best of friends and have not taken our friendship to the next level and I don't even have it in mind to take the relationship to the next level,” I replied. “Why?” He asked. “Nothing, or let me say, maybe I'm not ready for such a relationship you are talking about,” I replied. “Well, if you can give it a trial, I know she will give in, she must have been considering it coming,” he said. “Okay,” I replied.

After my friend, Ayo had left my place at the hostel, I began to ruminate on what Ayo told me and it's after I had deep thought about our conversation that I began to have this kind of special feelings for my best female friend.

I considered what Ayo and I discussed and I decided to approach Ife in our next class. So, on getting to the class the following day, I saw Ife and we greeted as we used to and I told her that I have something to discuss with her after the class which she obliged to.

So, immediately after the class, I went to her, but before then, I was afraid of telling her my mind as I would not want her to say no to my proposal, so, for this reason, my heart was beating so fast.

However, I summoned courage and I approached her and on getting to her, we greeted each and we hugged after which she asked,

“Sam, you said we have something important to discuss?" “Yes,” I replied? “Hope, there's no problem?”she asked again. “Not at all,” I answered. “Okay, what's that thing that you want us to discuss?” She asked. “It's nothing too serious, but I don't know where to start from,” I said. “You don't know where to start from?” She asked and I replied, “ yes.” Then, start from anywhere,” she said.

That was how I started with what I had in mind for her. I told her that I love her and that I would want us to be together. I explain further how I have been having this kind of a special feeling for her, but I didn't know how to convey my thoughts and feelings to her.

After I had said all my mind to her, she burst into laughter and it's then I was wondering what might have caused her to be laughing so loud as she was. After few meaning of her laugher, and when she had stopped, she parted me at my back and said,

“Sam, I'm so sorry, this wouldn't be possible as I already have someone in my life.” “You must be kidding,” I said. “What do you mean, I must be kidding?” She replied. “You must be kidding because I have never seen you with any other guy except me,” I replied. “Well, you might have not seen me with anyone, but last week I said yes to Akin, that guy in our student fellowship," she said. “Last week,” repeated. “Yes, last week,” she confirmed. “Why didn't you tell me you are into a relationship?” I asked. “I didn't tell you because, it's none of your business and it's nothing to do with our friendship either,” she answered.

After she had said this, her eyeballs became red and she said she was angry with me. She said she had waited till last week for me to come and approach her and profess my love to her all to no avail and that's why he accepted Akin who had been disturbing her for over a year now.

When I heard this, I was devastated and forgave myself for what I had caused myself. It's a bitter pill for me to swallow as Ife would not leave Akin and accepted me and she told me that she had promised herself that the first person she agreed to date or marry would be the one she would marry.

After she had said this, I ran out of strength as it's like the world was over. However, she told me that we can be best of friends and that's what we have been till now. She has gotten married to Akin and I too to my lovely wife Aanu but even at that, we are still best of friends till tomorrow.
