The Effect of Pollution on Human Health

The first thing that comes to my mind when the word pollution is mentioned is that of a dirty environment where diseases and infirmities thrive and affect the health system of its inhabitants.

However, as time went on, I realized that the word pollution or what's meant by pollution is actually more than what I have always thought it to be. It's in my current research about pollution that I got to know that there's noise pollution, water pollution, air pollution, land pollution just to mention but a few.

So, having said much about pollution, I would like to delve into the topic of the scifi weekly prompt which has to do with pollution. But before then, I would like to define what pollution is in my own layman definition.

Pollution is the contamination of the environment including air, water, land and so on due to the activities of man. So, in this definition of mine, I would say the key word there is contamination and when something is being contaminated, it brought about sickness and infection to the human body which is the sole work of pollution.

Furthermore, when it comes to pollution, I can boldly say I have witnessed and even been a victim of one or two of these forms of pollution and their effects on my community cannot be overemphasized.

Sometimes ago when I was an apprentice at one of the sawmill which was located at a new site. there's a tragic event that claimed the lives of four out of four members of a family. Though, I'm not supposed to share this with us, but because there are lessons to be learnt from it, I would share my experience with what I have witnessed when it comes to air pollution with us. But before then, I pray that may God Almight grant the lost souls eternal rest.

It all happened that there's a family in the neighborhood very close to the sawmill. This family just moved to their uncompleted apartment at a new site from where they were staying in the heart of the city. But because they have not completed their house, they used to switched on their generating set at night just to illuminate their house and its environs. But instead of them taking the generator outside of their main building, they chose to be using it in their kitchen which has no burglar bars.

But on a particular weekend, the man who was the head of the family called those who would helped them to fix the window and immediately they came around to fix the window. He got them paid and they left.

When it's night, the man went to the kitchen and as usual turned on the generator just to illuminate their house and its environs. He forgot that the window which was always opened for air to pass out had been fixed and not opened. So, like I said earlier, he turned on the generator without taking it out of the kitchen. And because of the stress of the day's work, the whole family slept off without turning off the generator which was still working.

Unfortunately, while they were all asleep, the air being emitted from the generator filled the whole house and they all inhaled it and this led to their death.

So, when I heard about their death the following Monday, I was shocked and this was because I have never heard of such before. It's when I heard about it that I got to know that it is a form of air pollution that can be fatal.

So, since then, I have come to know that air pollution is one of the most dangerous forms of pollutions that we have. Though, all pollution is bad, but because of its air nature, I believe no other form of pollution can be as deadliest as the air pollution.

In conclusion, one thing that I know can be done to bring air pollution to the barest minimum is that there should be a law guiding against air pollution in the society. Aside this, people should also be sensitized on what pollution is all about and that the effect of any form of pollution is death. When people are aware of this, then the society would be a safe haven for all and pollution would be reduced to the barest minimum.
