Teachers and their oversight duties

Greetings!

The teaching profession is such a beautiful and a noble profession and this is because of its practical way of molding lives. I thank God that I'm a teacher, the mother of all other professions.

Having said this, I would like to delve into the topic of the prompt which is, “the teacher's role.” The teacher role to me is not limited to the classroom alone and this is because of the nature of the job which is all about instilling knowledge in the lives of people, most especially the younger ones.

Now back to the question which we have in the prompt of the week, I would say that the roles or duties of a teacher should not be limited to the school and classroom alone. This is because children or students need to be followed up in their learning even after leaving the school.

Although, our society is not in support of this as so many teachers have been injured or sent to their early graves just because of them trying to perform their duties outside the four walls of the classroom.

I could remember a colleague of mine at work that was injured when he was trying to perform an oversight duties of a teacher after the closing hour.

On a particular friday, after the closing hour, this my friend saw some of our students fighting on the street and he tried to separate them and caution them to stop fighting but when the students saw him that he was the one trying to separate them, they descended on him and beat him to stupor just because he had previously at school corrected one of them, maybe he would have even been killed if not for the timely intervention of the security personnel that were close to the scene of the incident.

Although he had good intentions of separating and cautioning them to stop fighting, he would have paid the ultimate price with his life if not for God.

So, since then, I have stopped going about the street after the school hour to instill discipline into my students and this is because, doing so outside the walls of the classroom might cause the unexpected to happen if care is not taken.

Aside from this, carrying out or performing the oversight function of a teacher outside the four walls of the school might be so dangerous not to the teacher alone but to his family and also his properties.

The problem is that the students of today lacks discipline and even their parents are always in support of their bad deeds and if one should cry more than the bereaved, then it might be costly as no one would be held responsible for anything if something bad should happen to the teacher since the students would scatter and took to their heels.

In conclusion, the duties of teachers should have spanned from the classroom to the outside world, but the danger in it is more than the advantages.
