Power supply: A National Disaster

Greetings!

Power or electricity as the case may be is one of the social amenities that are supposed to be benefited from by the entire populace of a country and this is because of its economic and social effect on a country.

Though, there's countries that are seriously benefiting from the constant power supply as being supplied by the power distribution company or agencies of those countries, but here in my own country, Nigeria, a country that claims to be the giant of her continent which is Africa, the reverse is the case.

Though, we in Nigeria are not really enjoying any dividends of democracy or government at all, but to be candid, that of power is so bad that we cannot even boast of 30 minutes electricity in my area talkless of 1 hour electricity. The state of power supply in my country is not really encouraging as it's become a national disaster in which a state of emergency should be declared.

Now, it's been like 3 months ago that we in my area have seen light or electricity. This has always been the system since I got to this my new apartment a year ago and we have been living with such life without any hope at sight. It's such a pathetic situation.

We have really made complain to the distribution company but all to no avail, people have protested the lack of power supply in my area, but nothing concrete has been done to salvage the situation. This is really a serious matter.

Not only this, the hike in the price of the electricity tariff in my country despite the epileptic power supply cannot just be talked about as the price increases everyday, mostly for those that are using direct connection. Though, there's also increase for those using the prepaid, but notwithstanding, there's is better and this is because you pay for what you use unlike the direct that pay for both what they use and the one they did not use. This act is so disturbing.

In my country, the state of electricity is in quagmire and it seriously needs immediate attention, can you imagine a foremost health institution in the city of Ibadan, the largest city in the west African part of the world were left without electricity for more than 3 months.

The institution was left in total darkness with doctors not able to do their job as they were supposed to, not only this, even some of the patient were discharged and sent home. Though some that have money went to other private hospitals, but those without financial muscle went home and who knows what later happened to them, just because of lack of power supply.

In a country of millions of people, it's only a few of this number who are the first class citizen that can afford other means of power generation that are really enjoying the country. Even, some of the big companies have leff the country just because of lack of power supply, those they were left have resulted to using diesel to power their generator to boost their operation and as a result, the prices of good and service are now on the rise

Now, people have now resulted to helping themselves by getting solar panels to generate power at their various homes, this comes as a result of the inability of the government through the ministry of power , a ministry saddled with power generating in the country to have a breakthrough in supplying power to the nation. Though, they have promised us time without number but all to no avail, what we used to get from them is failed and empty promises. Not only this, the electricity grid in the country would not even stop collapsing. It's only God that will save us in this country.

Also, apart from people helping themselves with the solar panel just to generate power, the use of power bank, generating set are on the high in the country, just yesterday when I went to pay my electricity bill at one of the electricity distribution company.

When I got there, I saw the one attending to me with his power bank plugged to his phone, not only this, they were even on generator to power their PC for operation, what kind of a country we are when a deliverer even needs deliverance.

Also, people have now use the opportunity to start a new business called charge you phone business. Just because of lack of power supply to various home and for you to charge or power your phone or power bank, you must go to where you will pay to power all these gadgets. It's so serious. Even all the appliances I have at home are now getting spoilt just because of lack of power supply. Though we are hoping for the best, but we are not sure of any positives yet.

This is my entry to the sciFi weekly prompt.

Thanks for reading.

Wr are in a country where even the most basic necessities like electricity are a luxury. The fact that people have to pay to charge their phones and power banks is outrageous. It's a vicious cycle of frustration and hopelessness. When will things change, when?
We keep hoping and believing though.

Thanks for sharing.

Are you being serious that you can boast of a 30-minute power supply? That's crazy; if I am correct, you said you stay in Ibadan. I thought Ibadan used to have light very well.
And for the generator part, don't even get me started. The cost of petrol is enough to make people give up on using it.
