Sam’s Hangout #77 - “ONCE SAID CHALLENGE”

"We win together as a team, and we lose together as a team.” – Kenny Smith

Hello everyone, my beautiful hive naija people, it's another beautiful weekend and we are so happy to have you here once again. It’s another weekend to buzz the hive blockchain even as we connect with ourselves. It’s just feel good to get everyone together every weekend to talk about random things and just have fun.

OBJECTIVE

As we all know, Sam`s Hangout is focused on promoting the togetherness of the Nigeria brethren through engagement and it's also now concerned of the well being of each and everyone who is part of the engagement. This account was opened to make the engagement more personal and official. Weekend engagement every weekend on Hive was originally created by @ galenkp as he founded the Weekend-Engagement community and initiative. I thought it would be nice to have a weekend engagement too in a Nigerian way for everyone that cares to be a part of it.

ONCE SAID CHALLENGE

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing “ONCE SAID CHALLENGE”. I’m sure some of us are familiar with this challenge. It’s not hard at all.

"Share something your parent(s) once said. Anything. You know how our parents most times will be like Sam, don’t follow that boy, he is a bad influence. So I’ll say it this way, my mom once said, “Sam, don’t follow Jude because he is a bad influence”.

OR

”My teacher or anyone (tell us who) once said..”

Our hangout is still in mind and plans are still forming to make it a reality. Check out our last post to stay updated. Here’s a link to the post. Thanks to everyone that has contributed and is contributing towards the success of this hangout. Keep supporting the plans as we are making good progress.

Remember, the aim of the hangout is to bring people together, particularly Nigerians. So make sure you have this in mind when responding to the questions. And feel free to add even more to it if you have more.

If you know you have a topic you would want us to discuss about, please feel free to suggest them to us. All you have to do is suggest the topic in the comment and tag @sam.hangout to it.

Okay Let's Gist!!!

Be as simple and sincere with the discussion, hehehe.

Don't you think we are forgetting somebody?... Well, I'm sure we are...

untitled.gif

There are no further rules, please banter as you like, speak any Nigerian language (Igbo, Yoruba, pidgin, Efik), anything, as long as someone else can understand.

Pls note : However, please don't take it to the extreme.

With all that said, let the discussion begin...

My mom always tells me in Igbo, “Put your head down, you’re a woman!”

I was so closed minded I saw it from only the narrow angle. But as I grew and then came across the adage, “Fight like a girl! Think like a woman!” I was struck.

Till now, my mom still uses that but now it’s my kid sister. For some reason I haven’t been getting it as much. But my sister does now. Hehehe.

Think like a woman. Read a book "think like a monk" one time.

Anyways, what does it mean to think like a woman?

0
0
0.000
avatar

Well, a woman thinks ahead. A girl dwells in the present. A woman is compassionate enough but she doesn’t let it cloud her judgment. A girl is an emotional wreck, thrown around by every little thing. You get? It’s just something I came across. A woman builds, a girl sabotages. A woman grows, a girl envies.

Wow, great analysis deraaa, it seems i will also start thinking like a woman lol

Well the statement is very broad. It depends on how you see it. To think like a woman might mean putting yourself in her shoes and understanding her feelings. This is more applicable to romantic relationships. There’s also the adage “Act like a woman, think like a man.” I’m sure you’ve come across it.

Well, until you really grow as a person, that statement will only sound offensive and straight up wrong to you. That’s what I understood.

I used to think she meant I should take everything lying down. When what she was saying was for me to see through my mind not my emotions.

Today is Friday and as my Dad would say, “you’re not going to school for me, you’re schooling for yourself”. He says it every Friday because when I was younger I didn’t like attending school on Fridays. I felt like it shouldn’t be a school day cos we close earlier and it’s a Friday! Like almost weekend lol.
Those years i never really understood what he meant by the saying until years after, when I had finished secondary school and then about to go into the higher institution. I came to a self actualisation that Ive actually been schooling for my own self and not for anyone.

Now guess what, on fridays in my school back then we had time for extra curricular activities and real life applicable knowledge like catering, arts music etc. Today im a nation wide recognized visual artist, im a music prodigy and also a multi linguist and still metamorphosing. All of these were achieved as a result of being forced to attend school on fridays when I didn’t want to because I felt we were always going to school in sport wears to play.
In my university days I realized that the educational system could be hacked and you can scale through without doing too much. Now this happened because in my subconscious my dad has successfully inculcated the mentality that education and knowledge is for who ever acquires it and not the sponsor so that made me love learning and my university days felt like nursery, so easy just because of the saying “you’re not schooling for me but for yourself”.

Thanks for engaging.
Wealth Grammy.

I so much love this topic. Because I have a lot of "Once said " to share.

My father once said " wash a pig , comb a pig, a pig is still a pig "

So anytime you say this in our house everyone will just start laughing, because they know who you are trying to mimic.

He likes saying this thing whenever you repeat something that he has corrected you before. So he will just look at you and say it 🤣🤣🤣

0

0.000
avatar

What does it mean

0
0
0.000
avatar

Base on his usage. It means that you don't want to change , no matter what he has done to make you change.

Remember, even if you wash a pig now to make the pig clean, the pig will still go back to the mud

0

This thing dey always pain person especially if you've been where they rear pigs before 😂

Or when they say "omo ile to won o ki nte eni fun" meaning "a floor child that they don't bother spreading mat for" cos e go still roll go floor

Ahahaahaahhah seriously, e dey pain ehn

Our lap technician in the uni once said " Udofia , move out "

It was always funny, because anytime he is giving instructions in the class and you are disturbing, he will point to you and tell you to move out. And he was always fun of telling one Udofia to move out.

So any time we wanted to make the class fun, someone will just shout " Udofia move out" 🤣🤣🤣

So I'm here to answer the great question and I'm sure there will be so much banter in the comment section for this one 😂 cos our African mothers na like God of thunder when it comes to discipline

So my mum once said "Iya kooko janjann" 🤪
(Helter and Skelter mother)

My mum would always say this whenever a child is around at home but not really helping with chores or waking up late when she's almost done.

My mum once said "ile oko lo nba e lo, o ti duri ni ipako e" meaning "it is following you to your husband's house, it's there at the back of your skull".

She would always say this whenever a female child do something bad and would remind us of our husband's house even when we were not ready to get married

I can’t believe I’ll be sharing this but there was one a time I was in love with a lady. It was a one sided love, I was loving and dating her in my mind but she only saw me as…. Well I don’t know.
Since she doesn’t want to acknowledge my love, I decided to tell her my feelings.

Then she said those statements “🫤🫤🫤🫤

Now, that we are friends, she wanted to pay me a visit and I once said “Sorry I have a girlfriend, you’ll have to take permission from her because she’s my future “

Most girls don't know their words can lead people to committing suicide, life is complex, the least you can do is to be kind with words.

Simply saying no to a date request is fine. Why go all the way to demean a guy. That's bad of her and lucky you that you didn't date her or else, she go use your eye see pepper 😂.

My mom said alot of things but the one that keeps ringing in my head and it is definitely something our mum's have said but probably in different context.

My mum once said,
"Remember the family you are from. Don't forget what we went through and how God saw us through"

This keeps me focused and on the right track. When peer pressure almost got to me, this was the rope tied on my waist to pull me out.

Made me realise if she sees the future.

This one was very believable back in the day. It made me fear eating head of fish self till date.

Teachers back then used to sing one song for failures in the class... It goes like this

Olodo rabata, oju eja lo mo je
Oni mo owe mo sileti lo mo je ati laro, what turu lo mo je ....shame
.

A part of that song says that it's eating the eyes of fish that makes someone dull.

My dad once told me, "Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen."

He told me this when I was just a teenager. Back when I viewed life through the limited lens only my eyes provided. I only believed things I saw and what I heard. It took me a while, but I've found it to be true. Just because you're not seeing something happen in the moment doesn't mean that something isn't warming up in the background. Just because you don't see the caterers cooking doesn't mean there won't be jollof rice at the Owambe.

And when you take it to the religious angle, you see that just because you can't see the "workings" doesn't mean that when the time is right, you won't get your miracle. It's up to you to believe, to have faith, and just know that in the end, what's yours can't be taken from you. It'll always come to you.

Somebody shout HALLELUYAH!!!!!!

Geh geh once said “open your eyes well!”
Open your eyes well depicts that his advice are to be taken and assimilated through the eyes and not the ears, so when he’s giving you and advice…”open your eyes well well” (laughs).
Open your eyes in the sense that what he says literally happens to people around so you can see it and/or not hear it

And one of his popular advice is “ once you get money no let anybody deceive you, buy car”

Yes I did! We were reminded of how we must ensure our minds are free and pure from any uncleanliness of either fights, malice or grudges before coming before God in prayers or before we can be able to receive God's goodness and mercies cos only those with clean hands and cleanse hearts will receive blessings from God.

In summary, flee from every appearances of sin
E.g @mathewdaddywah that was eyeing and forecasting babes inside church when sermon was going on. Flee!

I joined first service online.
Message : Succeeding by God's word.
Scripture reference : Psalms 119:30.
To possess the right word of God is the greatest way to control everything in life.

How to access the word for all round success

  1. Be born again/new birth (Mark 4:11)
  2. Thirst for the word of God (Isaiah 55:1)
  3. Ask for the help of the holy Spirit (1 John 2:27)
  4. Search with your heart (Ecclesiastes 1:13, Jeremiah 29:13)

Why is the word of God powerful?
A) God's word is God himself (John 1:1)
B) His Word carries eternal life (John 6:63)
C)The word of God is the carrier of the power of God(Romans 1:16)
D) It solves all problems in life

I didn't go to church oooo let me not lie pls.
I woke up this morning, because my friend was travelling to Lagos, so I had to help get things in order. Then I went back to sleep ,then woke you , I boiled yam and ate around 12pm . And after chatting on discord for a while , I slept off and woke up few minutes to 3pm , I entered toilet did the needful and strolled to kitchen and carried what was Left of my meal and ate it.

Currently still lying down on my bed , I got no plans to leave here until tomorrow.🙂

Happy Sunday guys
Yes, I went to church and it’s my turn to be paired with another teacher in teaching the children’s class. It was fun and exciting.
The teacher taught them the topic: Jesus is the vine.

I enjoyed the way she taught the children, especially coming prepared with an instructional material to explain what vine, branches and gardener meant. Jesus is the vine. We are the branches and God the father is the gardener.

Lesson learned was to always be connected to the vine (Jesus) to live a productive life and without Him, we can do nothing.

When I got home, I quickly fried some akara because I was hungry and couldn’t wait till the proper meal (Jollof rice) was cooked. So far, I have eaten and need to take some rest before leaving for house fellowship by 5:30pm. When I get back home, will do some work online then probably watch a movie and then call it a day.

Yes I went to church, I always do 😁. Today was FYB (final year brethren) service, so the church was filled up with different family members who came to celebrate their children/friend/siblings for graduating. It was a very long service that I was so tired and left 30 minutes before the close of service.

There were a lot of drinks, food and snacks, since I hardly eat people's food I didn't collect anything from anyone.

Tears were just flying up and down during testimony time, as they were thanking God and all those who came through for them.
