Endometrium - Secretory phase Histology
Hello everyone, how are you all? Hope you all are doing well and i too. Today i would like to tell about endometrium how it looks like and endometrial biopsy or uterus resection and what is secretory phase and how it looks microscopically and what are the features.
Women will go through menstrual cycle when she attains puberty age. Menstrual cycle has 3 phases 1)Proliferative phase 2)ovulation phase and 3) Secretory phase
In this blog we are going to see about secretory phase.
Menstrual Cycle
I want to tell about briefly about menstrual cycle.
Menstrual cycle has 3, phases )Proliferative phase 2)ovulation phase and 3) Secretory phase
Menstrual cycle on average is of 28-30 day cycle and first 12-14 days is called proliferative phase where glands will proliferative and they are in tubular forms(glands) and mitosis is seen in the lining epithelium of glands(It is the characteristic feature of proliferative phase) and stroma is compact and mitosis also seen in it.
Ovulation phase - It is of 2 days between 14-16th
Where ovulation occurs and where copulation should take place if couple wants children.
Secretory phase - it is from 16th day to 28 or 30th day. Where glands will be converted to irregular, convoluted and dilated with subnuclear and supranuclear vacuolations. No mitosis is seen(characteristic distinguishing feature from proliferative phase) stroma is edematous and loose.
Secretory phase - Microscopic features
In the secretory phase, Glands will become irregular, convoluted and dilated. The stroma will becomes loose and edematous.
The lining epithelium of glands is made of columnar to cuboidal epithelium and we will see subnuclear vacuoles(vacuoles below the nucleus) and it appears like piano key. These vacuoles will have secretions and will go to supranuclear side and will secrete secretions from vacuoles.
Hope you understood about what is menstrual cycle and sevretory phase histological aspects.
