Why is there a character limit when one wants to create a thread ? , while typing it mentioned that only the first 240 characters will be visible

That's why it's called thread, similar to a tweet.
Because the purpose of threads is to share short pieces of content. However if you still would like to increase the character limit, you can buy a premium subscription. That will let you wite longer threads
If you upgrade to premium there's no limit
