Diary Of A Sweet Tooth || W.E #256

I have often wondered if I could do this myself. “Cut out sugar completely”. I have always added sugar to some of my foods to make it sweet, One of them is black coffee. As a coffee lover, I mostly add sugar to my black coffee to sweeten it a little before drinking. I also add sugar to yam and mostly Cassava flakes (Popularly known as garri). I also love taking sugar cane. It's one of my favorite things to eat. In fact I prefer sugary food to salty food.

I never knew there were some people who don’t use sugar or had completely cut off sugar till the day a friend of mine visited me one weekend. She didn't inform me she was coming, she only happened to pass by my house on her way back from somewhere.

She knocked on my door and I went to open it. Upon seeing her, I quickly drew her close to give her a warm embrace.

“You didn't tell me you were coming”, I said as soon as she sat down on a chair in the sitting room.

“I didn't know I was going to stop by myself. I was only passing by and thought I should check in on you at home”. She responded as I quickly offered her some water.

We talked for a while before I asked her what she would like to eat. She told me not to bother cooking as she wouldn't want to stress me and asked that I give her some cassava flakes as it is a food common to many Nigerian homes.

I quickly went to the kitchen to get her some cassava flakes in a small plate. I brought out some cold water and also added the container I used for storing my sugar at home.

“I'm sorry, I don't have any milk”, I said as I placed all the contents on the table in front of her.

“No, the garri and water is fine”, she said, taking the plate and scooping some cassava flakes into it.

“What about sugar?” I asked her , wondering why she was not taking any. She laughed and told me she doesn't take sugar. To say I was surprised is an understatement.

I further asked how the cassava flakes was supposed to taste good if she didn't add sugar and she told me she has been eating her foods and drinks without sugar for more than two years and she is used to the taste. She went on to talk about how sugar is bad for the body...blah blah blah and also dropped in some advice to me, that I can learn to stay away from taking sugar little by little till I can cut it off completely.

After she left, I decided to try it out by also taking a few scoops of cassava flakes. Two spoons in, I knew that cutting out sugar is a no-no for me. I quickly added some sugar and finished it up.

Maybe I was quick to judge based on that but then I have always enjoyed sweet foods.

Even as a child I have had a sweet tooth and though I take sugar in moderation now, I am not looking forward to cutting it out any time soon.
