A study published by the USC University of Southern California, explored the impact of music education programs, including an extracurricular online popular music education program, on middle school students. The study examined positive youth development, school connectedness, and hopeful future expectations in middle school students through four levels of musical participation in school-based and extracurricular music programs. And the study used the five core areas of Positive Youth Development: competence, confidence, connection, character, and compassion.

Research indicates that music can help students develop skills and competencies, resolve emotions, engage in identity work, and strengthen connections to school and community. According to the research, students who start music education before the age of 8 look to the future with more hope. Additionally, younger students who studied music scored higher on key measures of positive youth development. Students who participated in different types of music education and for longer periods of time scored higher in measures of competence and hopeful future expectations. This and many similar studies reveal that music education contributes to increased creativity and self-confidence, better mental health, emotional stability and student performance, so it is possible to talk about the many benefits of being interested in music from childhood. In particular, the pandemic has negatively affected the mental health of many people, especially students, so we should take such research into consideration. And I think legislators and school administrators should further expand music education programs, and I believe music can greatly benefit students.

Enjoy the music and stay with Love.

Question of the Day : What are your thoughts about the research? Can music education benefit students' well-being?

Congratulations @jfang003! Count me in for another round, please! Thank you so very much!

Music is powerful, with so many beneficial and positive effect on people that this study does not at all surprise me. The beneficial effects, however, depends on the type of music, with some versions being far more beneficial than others. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Yes and No. It all depends on individual person and his interests. Overall, music does have effect on every individual whether they know it or not.

@henruc
Learning to play an instrument or engage in musical activities can stimulate brain development and improve overall cognitive performance.

I think it could but I think it depends. Some people might just not be interested in music and I think that it might also depend on the type of music. I like listening to music but I don't know if I want to learn an instrument right now though.

Thanks

IGN @olaf.gui

Music education can certainly benefit the students' wellbeing. In my country we have music classes in public school. At my time it was just 5th and 6th grade but I think it's more years now. However it's something very rudimentary. Something more serious would require a huge investment. That's the only reason it's not a priority.

This is why both of my daughters go to Music school, one is playing Violin and other one Accordion. We plan on sending the boys there too (when they start school). Music is important part of our lives
