The Joshua Tree is the fifth studio album by Irish rock band U2, released on 9 March 1987 by Island Records. The album was produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. In contrast to the ambient experiments of their 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire, U2 aimed for a harder-hitting sound within the limitation of conventional song structures on The Joshua Tree. Additionally, The Joshua Tree album is influenced by American and Irish roots music, and with sociopolitically conscious lyrics embellished with spiritual imagery, it contrasts the band's antipathy towards the "real America" with their fascination for the "mythical America".

Inspired by American experiences, literature, and politics, U2 chose America as the theme of this album. Recording began in Ireland in January 1986, and to foster a relaxed, creative atmosphere, the band first recorded at two homes, with recording completed in November 1986, with additional production continuing until January 1987. Throughout the sessions, U2 sought a "cinematic" quality for the recording that would evoke a sense of location, particularly the open spaces of the United States. They represented this in sleeve photographs that depicted them in American desert landscapes. Additionally, various events during the sessions helped shape the album's conscious tone, including the band's participation in the Conspiracy of Hope benefit concerts for Amnesty International, the death of roadie Greg Carroll, and lead vocalist Bono's travels to Central America.

The Joshua Tree received to critical acclaim, also topping the charts in more than 20 countries and becoming the fastest-selling album in British history. Additionally, the album increased the band's stature from "from heroes to superstars", according to Rolling Stone. The Joshua Tree won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988. Additionally, the band supported the record with the Joshua Tree Tour throughout 1987, when they began to perform in stadiums for the first time in their career.

The Joshua Tree album is frequently listed among the greatest albums of all time, and is also among the world's best-selling albums with sales of over 25 million copies. Additionally, U2 commemorated the record's 20th anniversary with a remastered re-release and its 30th anniversary with concert tours and reissues. The Joshua Tree album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014 and was selected for preservation in the US National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

I like listening to U2's songs and there are great songs on The Joshua Tree album as well, the songs I listen to the most on this album are "With or Without You", "Where the Streets Have No Name", and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". Frankly, it is very difficult to say that only one song in U2's albums is my favorite, so I chose the 3 songs I listen to the most.

U2 - With Or Without You

I think "With Or Without You" is U2's greatest ballad. A rippling synthesizer and an unmistakable bass line form the basis of this song. The song's spiritual longing, desire, soaring falsetto vocals, and reverberating guitar effects in the song are truly amazing. I think this is hands down one of the greatest songs ever written. This song is the perfect way to reflect on your memories, maybe that's why I never get bored of it. It is an immortal masterpiece.

U2 - Where The Streets Have No Name

"It’s the point where craft ends and spirit begins," Bono said of "Streets," and if you don't like Bono or U2, it's the kind of thing that will make you hate them. So what if it's true? “Where The Streets Have No Name”, from its rumbling, luxuriant fade-in to its final guitar ripple captures the drama and spiritual yearning that's all over The Joshua Tree. It is an euphoric, the sort of song that's made to ring out in a stadium or across a desolate countryside. Also, if I remember correctly, U2 played this track at almost every concert since its release.

U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

It's insane to me that there are so many amazing songs on The Joshua Tree and that they're so relatively deeply ensconced in the 80's. I can't believe the song "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is almost 40 years old, it's arguably still one of U2's best. U2 clearly shows the power of music in this album.
