Every day I drive this road and see the same picture under the wheels. Fallen red bright fruits lie on the ground. These are strawberries from a tree. Yes, I am not wrong. A strawberry tree grows behind the raft.

Щодня я проїжджаю цією дорогою і бачу під колесами одну і ту ж картину. На землі лежать опалі червоні яскраві плоди. Це суниці з дерева. Так, я не помиляюсь. За плотом росте суничне дерево.

This exotic tree comes from the Mediterranean. In the natural environment, it is found in Morocco, Lebanon, Israel, and Algeria. This tree can also be found in the countries of Western Europe. The large-fruited strawberry tree is mentioned in the works of ancient philosophers, for example, it was written about by someone who lived in 300 BC.
The wood of the strawberry tree is very strong, does not rot and has a beautiful red color. It is used to make musical instruments, watch cases, decorative caskets, and furniture. These products are very precious and beautiful.
The strawberry tree is very popular in Madrid. Even the image of this tree is on the coat of arms of the city. And in the center of Madrid stands a large statue of a bear eating fruit from a strawberry tree.
Once a year, the tree looks for bark. During this, a crunch is heard. The tree seems to be whispering. It is also called "shameless" for this feature, as the trunk remains bare.

Це екзотичне дерево родом з Середземномор'я. У природному середовищі зустрічається в Марокко, Лівані, Ізраїлю, Алжирі. Також це дерево можна зустріти і в країнах Західної Європи. Суничне крупноплідне дерево згадується у творах древніх філософів, наприклад, про нього писав що жив у 300 році до нашої ери.
Деревина суничного дерева дуже міцна, не гниє і має гарний червоний колір. Її використовують для виготовлення музичних інструментів, футлярів до годинників, декоративних шкатулок, меблів. Ці вироби дуже коштовні і красиві.
Велику популярність суничне дерево має у Мадриді. Навіть зображення цього дерева є на гербі міста. А в центрі Мадрида стоїть велика статуя ведмедя, що поїдає плоди з суничного дерева.
Раз на рік деревоискидає кору. Під час цього чутно хруст. Дерево ніби перешіптується. Ще його за цю особливість називають "безсоромним" так як стовбур залишається голим.

The fruits of the strawberry tree are more like raspberries. They are bright red, up to 15-20 millimeters in diameter. The top is covered with a skin with bubbles. Inside, they are fleshy with many small seeds. The berries taste sweet, a little tart and not at all like strawberries.

Плоди суничного дерева скоріше подібні на малину. Вони яскраво червоні, в діаметрі до 15 - 20 міліметрів. Зверху покриті шкіркою з пухирцями. Всередині мясисті з безліччю дрібного насіння. На смак ягоди солодкі, трішки терпкуваті і зовсім не такі як суниці.

The berries are edible, but you shouldn't eat a lot of them. It is said that an excess can cause hallucinations and a severe headache. And in general, they are very useful, like the whole tree. The bark contains a lot of tannin and is a good antiseptic. Berries help to establish a good work of the intestinal tract, help in the formation of urine. Extracts and decoctions from the leaves and bark of the strawberry tree heal wounds, well treat burns and various skin diseases. The pharmacological composition of the berries is little studied. But it is known that they contain a lot of sugars and no acids. Berries are rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants. They can be eaten fresh. They are also dried and frozen. Jams are made from them, liqueurs and vodka are made.

Ягоди їстівні але багато їх споживати не варто. Кажуть, що від надлишку можуть початися галюцинації і може початисятнемтерпний головний біль. А взагалі вони дуже корисні як і все дерево. Кора містить багато таніну та є добрим антисептиком. Ягоди допомагають налагодити добру роботу кишкового тракту, допомагають в утворенні сечі. Екстракти та відвари з листя та кори суничного дерева заживляють рани, добре лікують опіки та різні шкірні хвороби. Фармакологічних склад ягід мало вивчений. Але відомо, що в них міститься багато цукрів і немає кислот. Ягоди багаті на вітамін С та інші антиоксиданти. Їх можна їсти свіжими. Також їх сушать та заморожування. З них варять варення, роблять лікери та горілку.

Strawberry tree or arbutus
( Arbutus unedo ) is also interesting in that both fruits and flowers can be seen on the tree at the same time. The flowers, collected in inflorescences of white or pink color, are very similar to delicate lilies of the valley. They appear on the tree from November and bloom until January. Berries ripen at the same time.

( Arbutus unedo ) цікавий ще тим, що одночасно на дереві можна побачити як плоди так і квіти. Квіти, зібрані у суцвіття білого або рожевого кольору дуже подібні до ніжних конвалій. Вони появляються на дереві з листопада і квітнуть до січня. Одночасно дозрівають ягоди.

What was my daughter's surprise when she came to Italy and saw a large-fruited strawberry tree for the first time. Indeed, that exotic tree does not grow in Ukraine. Although you can grow it at home. It is possible to propagate stepson, seeds and shoots. I will try to collect seeds, maybe one day such a tree will grow in Lviv. And we will eat strawberries from the tree!

Яке було здивування моєї дочки коли вона приїжджала до Італії і вперше побачила суничне крупноплідне дерево. Дійсно,те екзотичне дерево в Україні не росте. Хоча можна його вирощувати вдома. Можна розмножувати пасинка, насінням та відростками. Попробую зібрати насіння, може виросте в мене у Львові колись таке деревце. І будемо їсти суниці з дерева!
