My friend did something I couldn’t believe.
For the past three years since we became friends, I’ve known him to be quiet, peaceful, and easygoing. The kind of person who’d rather walk away than argue. I used to joke that he’d never even been angry in his life. Sometimes, I’d ask what it would take to provoke him. He would just smile and wave off the question.

Then there’s this neighbor of his, loud, nosy, and unapologetically cheeky. She never minded her business, and worse, she talked about everything- things she saw and things she imagined. It was obvious that she had a crush on him. But rather than confess her feelings, she waited, hoping he’d make the first move. When it became clear he wouldn’t, she started to lash out.

Her target was any woman who came near him.
She made it her mission to chase away his female friends, often following them after they left and feeding them lies that he was a womaniser, a heartbreaker, a player. She told me same.But I didn’t believe her.
I knew my friend. Maybe not completely, but enough to trust his character, especially when it came to relationships. That night, I chatted with him and told him everything she said. He denied it all calmly but I could tell he was upset, but, as always, he kept it under control.

The next time I visited, she must have felt completely defeated that I've not given up on him. In her disappointment and anger, she deliberately threw the water she had just used to rinse her dishes at me. It splashed all over my legs.
"You’ve come again," she said. "Didn’t I warn you to stay away from him? I’m not sharing him with you!"

I stood there, stunned and furious. But before I could even react, the front door flung open and my friend rushed out, and for the first time since I’d known him, I saw fire in his eyes. He didn't speak in his usual calm tone. His voice was sharp, cutting through the tension like a blade.
"Are you out of your mind?" he shouted "How dare you treat her like that? What has she ever done to you?"

I was very shocked by the outburst, and for a second, I didn’t know who I was looking at. This wasn’t the man who always smiled things off, who always chose silence over conflict. This was someone els. Someone protective, someone fierce.

"Stay away from her. In fact, stay away from my guests. I’ve had enough of your nonsense,” he said with finality.
Then, without looking back, he gently took my hand and led me inside.

Unlike him, I’ve always been quick to react. But in that moment, he said everything I couldn’t. And i realized then that even the calmest waters can rage when pushed too far.
