She Went to War

Lilian traveled to Lagos in search of greener pastures. Her father had stopped caring for the family, preferring to spend on another woman. Her mother, who was a pepper seller could barely make ends meet. To ease the burden, Lilian left, hoping her absence would make life easier for her younger siblings.

Fate smiled on her. A new firm laid off old workers and brought in fresh faces, Lilian was among the lucky ones. She worked hard, sending money home regularly. Her mother used it to expand her small business. Gradually, life began to change for them. They no longer depended on her father’s irregular support.

That Chang did not sit well with him. Jealousy came in as he watched the once-dependent household move on without him. The respect he used to command, though undeserved, vanished. Enraged by being sidelined, he turned cruel, taking out his frustrations on his wife and children. Neighbors and siblings constantly updated Lilian. But she never reacted. She held her peace. Her warning to him was just: “If anything happens to my mother, you’ll regret ever having me as your daughter.”

That time Lilian was waiting for came. One weekend Lilian's dad threw his wife and children out, flinging their belongings into the street like garbage. A neighbor quickly called Lilian. Thankfully, she doesn't work on weekends. Lilian quickly hired five hefty young men, hopped into a van, and made the journey home. They arrived just late in the evening. With a heart full of rage, she marched toward the house with the boys behind her like an army.

That night, the street didn’t sleep because Lilian had come for war. What they did to Lilian's dad that night was something he would never forget.
