Ladies of hive community. Contest #246. That thing I value so much that means almost nothing to others.

All my life, I’ve been a casual dresser- not indecent, just simple. I managed with what I had because that was all I could afford. Deep down, though, it never sat well with me. I knew it wasn’t how I wanted to appear, especially as a young lady and an educationist. But when money says no, what can I do?

And if there’s one thing I’ve quietly observed over time, it’s this: your shoes have a way of promoting your entire appearance. I don't know who has noticed this too. I’ve always admired ladies who dressed well- decent, official, and neat. There’s just something graceful about it. It commands respect. It draws admiration.

There’s truth in the saying, “You are addressed the way you dress.” As someone in the teaching profession, I know I should always appear smart, put-together, and confident. My dressing should reflect the dignity of my role. But I couldn’t help it, most times, it was crocs or palms I normally use.

Then something changed. I finally got myself a pair of cover shoes. Simple, but elegant.

Nothing flashy, yet rich in quiet confidence. And believe me, everything about my appearance changed from that day.

The first day I wore them to school, my colleagues were visibly surprised. Their expressions said it all. My mistress, who had known me for always dressing casually, didn’t hold back. She smiled wide and said, “Rita is now a big girl!” 😀

Now, I walk into any office in my school without feeling small or awkward. Before, I’d feel ashamed entering big offices in slippers or worn-out flats.

I'd avoid certain places, afraid of how I’d be perceived. But now, I step in boldly, confidently.

Even when I walk on my street on my way to work, I see people glance at me, and I can almost hear their thoughts- “This young lady must be working in a serious place.” That silent respect, that admiration follows me. My dressing now tells the story of who I am becoming.

I no longer feel hidden in a crowd. When I walk with friends, I don't shrink in shame because of my shoes. My look now matches my purpose. I attract good people, better energy, and brighter confidence.

And to think… it all begins with this one pair of cover shoes

and I'm hoping to get some more soon.
