Father’s Day: Because fathers deserve more than just a day.

When I think of Father’s Day, it always stirs a quiet wave of joy in me. This year was no different. Determined to make it special, I began preparing my dad’s outfit the day before, washing and ironing his expensive wrapper and crisp white senator attire. I polished his shoes until they gleamed and wiped his glasses spotless. My goal was to make him look swaggerlicious 😎, like a 40-year-old who could still take a wife for himself. With visitors expected at church, I wanted him to shine.

Sunday arrived, bright and full of promise. At church, men of all ages, young, old, married, and single, stood proudly in their wrappers, some covered over shirts and trousers. The air was filled with joy, laughter, and the warmth of shared celebration.

After Sunday School and worship, it was time for the men to take center stage. One by one, they shared heartfelt testimonies. My dad stood tall, recounting his journey from a young single man to a blessed husband, father, and grandfather. My chest swelled with pride as he spoke. More testimonies followed, then hymns, and finally, a jubilant thanksgiving session if praise.

Then came the moment I’ll never forget: my dad danced. Not just a sway or a step, but a full, joyful dance like David praising the Lord. I was not left out of this. Even visitors were wiping sweat and fanning themselves after the session. The joy was contagious, unstoppable.

Our pastor closed with prayers for the men, the families and then the entire congregation. Afterward, we lingered over refreshments, snapping photos and trading stories. It wasn’t a big time event, but the love in that room was richer than any grand celebration.

Father’s Day reminds me how much fathers carry strength and are always steadfast. They deserve more than one day of honour. Yet, seeing my dad bask in that well-earned joy, surrounded by love, was a gift.

To fathers everywhere: Thank you. May you be strengthened to lead, love, and give with grace. And to the mothers who stand beside them, you make the team unstoppable.
