THE GREATEST GIFT TO HUMANITY

In my experience, I would say that the best thing that can happen to someone is to be literate, and the best gift a parent can give their child is literacy. I have seen how literate people behave and how illiterates behave, and I will never advise the former to anyone.

I will start with an example from my place of work, the staff who are literate are first paid better and secondly are assigned the important task to handle. In contrast, those who are not literate are paid less, they are also assigned tasks that do not require much thinking and decision making and sometimes won’t execute this task properly.

In an economy like ours, where everything has become difficult, the non-literate members of the society are still living with the idea of giving birth to children more than they can cater for, creating a state of out-of-school children and a future nuisance to society. A literate parent knows the importance of literacy and will end up making sure that their children become literate as well. In a country like ours, it is very important to be literate, even if you don’t have intentions to work for another person, it is still advisable to have at least a level of education. To function properly in a society, one must attain some level of literacy.

Literacy has its importance and values in our lives, it helps us behave better in society, helps us know and choose good leaders who will lead us and also helps us understand the importance of nation building. For everything you do, it requires you to have some level of literacy, to participate in church gatherings, in any group of society, to vote or be voted for, it is important that you are literate.

Imagine a circumstance where a farmer plants his crops in his farm and a herder goes up to the farm and clears everything in the farm after it has germinated is it is almost ready for harvest just to feed his flock. This act can only be done by a non-literate person who doesn’t understand the need for coexistence and the importance of hard work or the efforts of another human being like himself. Or a set of people who will hold grudges and pass them down generations, telling stories to their kids with instructions that these kids retaliate in the future for something that was not done to them directly or that they know of. The funny thing to note here is that only the non-literate members of this group have this mentality; those who are literate and have mingled with others have a better understanding and will not trespass.

Being literate helps us learn from the experience of others and teaches us what to avoid, seeing what it has caused from the actions of others. Being literate makes us understand the values of life; it is very difficult to find a person who is learned in a certain condition or situation. Without literacy, information and knowledge that have helped make our lives better would not be in existence, and I strongly suggest a strong awareness of the importance of Literacy.

I totally agree! Being literate changes everything — it opens doors, broadens horizons, and helps us live in society with more awareness. Education truly is the greatest gift!

Literacy indeed is a huge opportunity.
It just depends on how and if one knows how to use it.
