Why is listening more important than speaking?
A very famous phrase attributed to the Greek philosopher Epictetus says a lot about the importance and art of listening. The philosopher's phrase says the following: "We have two ears and only one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak." This phrase is basically a great piece of knowledge passed down through generations, in a simple way, no more than a few words, so that it's easy to understand that a wise person listens more than they speak.
The reasons for this statement are many, but one stands out. When a person is listening attentively, they are actively absorbing that knowledge, even if not 100% of it, because they are not simply practicing or storing it, but rather in their memory. By doing this, they end up benefiting themselves and, in most cases, harming no one.
However, a person who talks too much suffers a great risk stemming from the very logic behind the act of speaking. Words that are spoken cannot be taken back and can greatly hurt others, in a way that no medicine can heal, only time and reflection.
Another analogy, which I particularly like to use to understand the importance of listening more than speaking, is with the manufacturing of a product in a factory. Just as in Epictetus's phrase, where he points out that we have two ears to listen and absorb more, the manufacturing process is also similar. The first stage is precisely the arrival of the raw material, a portion of which is lost in the process of making the final product. This part is similar to the act of listening and processing what is heard in the brain.
Finally, the final product would be equivalent to the processing of ideas, which in this example would be the words that come out. We end up speaking less because during the processing of ideas, some is lost and only what is important remains. The important thing is that the final product is well done to compensate for the losses.
People who don't know how to listen!
Another important point in the art of listening, besides knowing how to listen more than you speak, is identifying this same characteristic in other people. When you notice that people are not paying attention to what you are saying, first evaluate whether you are really saying something important that requires attention, because before accusing, we have to evaluate ourselves. If that is the case, then the error of not listening falls on the other person. But if you're trying to convey something important and she doesn't want to listen, surely you have something more important to do than try to convince that kind of person to listen to you.
One of the points of the art of listening is learning to filter important topics and check if you are communicating with someone who does the same or not. If the person is ignoring you, I believe the best thing would be for you to go do something else and not waste your time. Porque escutar é mais importante do que falar?
Uma frase muito famosa que é atribuída ao filósofo grego Epicteto diz muito sobre a importância e a arte de escutar. A frase do filósofo diz o seguinte: “Temos dois ouvidos e apenas uma boca para que possamos ouvir o dobro do que falamos.”. Essa frase é basicamente um grande conhecimento passado geração por geração, de forma simples, não mais que algumas palavras, para que sem compreenda de maneira fácil que a pessoa sábia ouve mais do que fala.
Os motivos para essa afirmação são muitos, mas um deles se sobresai. Quando a pessoa está escutando atentamente, ela está ativamente absorvendo aquele conhecimento, por mais que não 100% dele, porque não está praticando ou guardando ele de forma simples, mas sim na memória. Ao fazer isso, ela acaba se beneficiando e não prejudica ninguém na maioria dos casos.
Entretanto, a pessoa que fala muito sofre um grande risco decorrente da própria lógica por traz do ato de falar. As palavras que são ditas não voltam e podem machucar o outro grandemente, de forma que nenhum medicamento pode curar, só o tempo e reflexão.
Uma outra analogia, que eu particularmente gosto de fazer para entender a importancia que escutar mais do que falar tem é com a fabricação de algum produto em uma fábrica. Assim, como na frase de epicteto, em que aponta o fato de termos dois ouvidos para escutar e absorver mais, no processo de fabricação também é similar. A primeira etapa é justamente a chegada da matéria prima, em que uma parte é perdida no processo ao fazer o produto final. Essa parte se assemelha ao ato de escutar e processar o que é escutado no cérebro.
Por fim, o produto final seria o equivalente ao processamento das ideias, que nesse exemplo seriam as palavras que saem. Acabamos falando menos porque durante o processamento das ideias, parte foi perdido e apenas o que é importante se manteve. O importante é que o produto final seja bem feito para compensar as perdas.
As pessoas que não sabem escutar!
Um outro ponto importante da arte de escutar, além de você mesmo saber escutar mais do que fala é identificar essa mesma característica em outras pessoas. Quando notar que as pessoas não estão prestando atenção no que fala. Primeiro faça uma avaliação se você está realmente falando algo importante que exija atenção, porque antes de acusar temos que avaliar a nos mesmos. Se for o caso, então o erro de não escutar recai sobre a pessoa. Mas se você está tentando informar algo importante e ela não quer ouvir, certamente você tem algo mais importante para fazer do que ficar tentando convencer esse tipo de pessoa a te escutar.
Um dos pontos da arte de escutar é aprender a filtrar os assuntos importante e verificar se você está se comunicando com alguém que faz o mesmo ou não. Se for o caso da pessoa estar te ignorando, acredito que o melhor seria você ir fazer outra coisa e não perdendo o tempo. Entretanto, isso não significa ser “ignorante” ao ponto de quando ela decidir te escutar, você não falar nada e ser rude. Mas sim, esperar pelo momento, em que você escutará que a pessoa está pronta para te escutar.
