How did Scholarships in NFT Games start?

The origin of the term scholarship comes from studies, in which financial aid is given to students to help pay for their education. This aid is usually based on the student's academic merit and financial need. In Web3 Games, Scholarships emerged more as a partnership bringing together users who had the money to buy NFTs and Tokens, but didn't have the time or didn't want to play, with players who had time available and were interested in playing.

In addition to the issue of time, several Web3 games have some requirements for in-game items such as NFT characters, Lands, Items to access the play-to-earn ecosystem, which can become a barrier for players. In this scenario, scholarships come to solve the problem. In the boom of NFT games, the price of the requirements to enter the games increased exponentially due to the high demand from players, which is normal. The more people want a product, the more it tends to increase in price if there are no ways to increase supply. In this sense, scholarships are a way to access these projects through a partnership between players with resources and those who do not.

Splinterlands was one of the first NFT games to have this Scholarship system, but if I'm not mistaken, play-to-earn scholarships started with Axie Infinity. In it, players needed a team of 3 axies to start playing, so the owners of some extra axies let another player play with their NFTs and they split the winnings. The model then caught the attention of other web3 games and became widely used in the environment. In Splinterlands, for example, the requirement is to have a good deck, which can often be expensive and encourages partnerships via scholarships.

Tournaments to choose Scholars!

Thanks to a tool created by a member of the Splinterlands community, Beaker, it was possible to create what is being called the Scholar Showcase Tournament Series. This will be a new tournament model in which players will have access to the same cards, with the outcome being determined by the skill and strategy of each participating player. The goal of this tournament and the platform is to allow Splinterlands Deck/Card owners to learn more about Scholars.

In the same way that traditional scholarships help students who stand out based on their academic performance, the idea of having a tournament system is quite similar to this format. In the case of Splinterlands, I believe the best name to use would be Partnership, because both parties win, since in traditional scholarships the aid amount may not be returned, but here both parties decide on a percentage to share the winnings.

These Scholar Showcase Tournaments are an opportunity for players who are interested in the game to show off their skills by participating in events and earning points, to attract the attention of users who own a deck but don't have the time to play. Thus, Scholars provide their contact information, league, and how much they intend to receive from the rewards division, while deck owners have access to all performance data from the tournament results and can get in touch. Interestingly, the announcement post says that you can expect leaderboards, spotlights and future collaborations created using this system.

Como começaram as Scholarships nos Jogos NFTs?

A origem do termo scholarship vem dos estudos, em que ajudas financeiras são feitas para os alunos, para ajudar a custear a sua educação. Essa ajuda geralmente é feita com base em critérios de mérito acadêmico do estudante e necessidade financeira. Nos Jogos Web3, os Scholarships surgiram mais como uma parceria unindo usuários que tinham o dinheiro para comprar os NFTs e Tokens, mas não tinham tempo ou não queriam jogar, com jogadores que tinham tempo disponível e estavam interessados em jogador.

Além da questão do tempo, diversos jogos web3 tem alguns requerimentos em itens do jogo como personagens NFTs, Lands, Itens para acessar o ecossistema play to earn, que podem se tornar uma barreira para os jogadores. Nesse cenário que os scholarships chegam para resolver o problema. No boom dos jogos NFTs, o preço dos requisitos para entrar nos jogos subiram de forma exponencial devido à alta demanda de jogadores, o que é normal, quanto mais pessoas querem um produto, mais ele tende à aumentar de preço se não houver formas de aumentar a oferta. Nesse sentido, os scholarships são uma forma de acessar esses projetos através de uma parceria entre jogadores com recursos e aqueles que não têm.

Splinterlands foi um dos primeiros jogos NFTs que teve esse sistema de Scholarship, mas se não estiver enganado, as scholarships de play to earn começaram com o Axie Infinity. Nele os jogadores precisavam de um time de 3 axies para começar a jogar, assim os donos de alguns axies extras deixavam que outro jogador jogasse com seus nfts e eles dividiam os ganhos. Em seguida, o modelo chamou atenção de outros jogos web3 e se tornou amplamente difundido no meio. No Splinterlands, por exemplo, os requisitos é ter um deck bom, que muitas vezes pode ser caro e incentiva a parceria via scholarships.

Torneios para escolher os Scholars!

Graças à uma ferramenta criada por um membro da comunidade do Splinterlands, o Beaker, foi possível criar o que está sendo chamado de Scholar Showcase Tournament Series. Esse será um novo modelo de torneio em que os jogadores terão acesso às mesmas cartas, fazendo com que o resultado seja determinado pela habilidade e estratégia de cada um dos jogadores participantes. O objetivo desse torneio e da paltaforma é fazer com os donos de Decks/Cartas do Splinterlands possam saber mais sobre os Scholars.

Da mesma forma que os scholarships tradicionais ajudam os alunos que se destacam com base na sua performance acadêmica, a ideia de ter um sistema de torneios é bastante similar à esse formato. No caso do Splinterlands acredito que o melhor nome a ser usado seria Parceria, porque ambos saem ganhando, visto que nos scholarships tradicionais o valor de ajuda pode não voltar, mas aqui ambos decidem uma porcentagem de divisão dos ganhos.

Esses Scholar Showcase Tournaments são uma oportunidade para um jogador que é interessado no jogo, mostre as suas habilidades participando dos eventos e pontuando, para chamar a atenção dos usuários que tem a posse de um deck, mas não do tempo para jogar. Assim, os Scholar colocam os dados de contato, liga e quanto pretendem receber da divisão de recompensas, enquanto os donos dos decks, tem acesso à todos os dados de performance por conta dos resultados dos torneios e podem entrar em contato. O interessante é que no post de divulgação é dito que pode-se esperar leaderboard, spotlights e futuras colaborações criadas nesse sistema.
