DeepFake - Benefits and Dangers!

When addressing a new and much-debated topic, it's interesting to start by asking: What is DeepFake? Interestingly, while researching it, I was surprised because I thought it only encompassed videos with fake faces, but I discovered it's a much broader topic, considering not only videos but also audio and images that have been edited or generated by artificial intelligence.

Benefits of DeepFake

The term DeepFake isn't exactly new, as it emerged in 2017, meaning it was already present well before the boom in Artificial Intelligence. That's why I found the addition of AI-altered/generated content curious, but it makes sense precisely because of this great advancement that has occurred and which has increased both the risks and the exponential benefits of editing and creating edited/altered content.

It is precisely by using this concept that we can identify some benefits of DeepFake. Whether it's good or bad depends a lot on its use. In cinema, for example, DeepFake could be used in some action scenes that require a stunt double. Generally, when a stunt double is needed, a professional with physical characteristics similar to the actor is used so that there aren't major differences in the film. However, at certain moments, the difference in the face becomes visible with the stunt double showing their face.

With the use of DeepFake, it could be used to edit film scenes by placing the actor's face on the stunt double to make it identical, or even to use an actor who doesn't look very similar but who, with DeepFake, becomes very similar. These uses can also be expanded to more edits and alterations to the face; it could be used for entertainment content with a personality telling a joke, for example.

Dangers of DeepFake

As I've already mentioned, the difference between benefits and dangers comes from the use employed of the technology. One of the dangers of DeepFake comes in video editing, for example during election periods, generating with AI politicians saying things they never said, which can change the votes of some voters less informed about technological advances.

Furthermore, since Deepfake is more comprehensive than videos, it's also necessary to be careful with phone calls these days, because the voice you hear may not be that of the person you believe is calling you; in other words, it could be a scam. However, to make edits with AI, it's necessary to have a database of information about the person, which can be obtained on social media or through social engineering scams designed to collect their data.

Therefore, it's important to learn and be aware of new developments and to be increasingly careful with your personal data. An example of a recent scam involves phone calls that may involve capturing people's voices. Thus, whether in video, audio, or image, the unauthorized use of Deepfake to cause harm to others is the danger. But there's no need to be against technology; the important thing is to use it correctly, as mentioned in the benefits of Deepfake.

Ao abordar um tema novo e muito debatido, é interessante começarmos questionando: O que é DeepFake? Curiosamente ao procurar mais informações sobre acabei me impressionando, porque achava que englobasse apenas os vídeos com rostos falsos, mas descobri que é um tema muito mais abrangente, sendo considerado além de vídeos, os audios e imagens também que foram editado ou gerados por inteligência artificial.

Benefícios do DeepFake

O termo DeepFake não é tão novo assim, porque ele surgiu em 2017, ou seja, já estava presente bem antes desse boom de Inteligência Artificial, por isso que achei curioso a adição de conteúdos alterados/gerados por IA, mas faz sentido justamente por esse grande avanço que houve e que aumentou tanto os riscos, mas como os benefícios exponencial das edições e das criações de conteúdo editado/alterado.

É exatamente usando esse conceito apresentado que podemos identificar alguns benefícios do DeepFake. A questão de ser bom ou ruim vai muito do seu uso, no cinema por exemplo, o DeepFake poderia ser utilizado em algumas cenas de ação que tenham a necessidade de utilizar um dublê. Geralmente quando há a necessidade um dublê, geralmente se usa algum profissional que tem característica físicas próximas a do ator para que não tenha grandes diferenças no filme. Entretanto, em certos momentos, a diferença no rosto fica visível com o dublê mostrando o seu rosto.

Com o uso de DeepFake, poderia ser utilizado para editar cenas de filme colocando o rosto do ator no dublê, para ficar igual ou até mesmo pensar em utilizar um ator não muito semelhante, mas que com o DeepFake fique muito parecido. Esse usos também pode ser expandidos para mais edições e alterações no rosto poderiam ser um conteúdo de entretenimento com alguma personalidade contando uma piada por exemplo.

Perigos do DeepFake

Como eu já comentei, a diferença entre benefício e perigos vem do uso empregado da tecnologia. Um dos periogos do DeepFake vem na edição de vídeos, por exemplo em épocas de eleições, gerando com IA políticos falando algo que nunca disseram, o que pode mudar os votos de alguns eleitores menos informados dos avanços da tecnologia.

Além disso, como Deepfake é mais abrangente que vídeos, também é necessário ter cuidado com as ligações nos dias de hoje, porque a voz que você escuta pode não ser da pessoa que você acredita estar te ligando, ou seja, pode ser um golpe. Entretanto, para que seja possível realizar as edições com AI, é necessário ter uma base de informações da pessoa, o que é possível de ser obtido nas redes sociais ou com golpes de engenharia social, feitos para coletar os seus dados.

Por isso, é importante aprender e estar ciente das novidades e tomar cada vez mais cuidado com os seus dados pessoais. Um exemplo de golpe realizado recentemente é de chamadas para o telefone, que pode ser o caso de captar a voz das pessoas. Assim, seja em vídeo, audio ou imagem, o uso sem permissão para algo que possa causar mal ao próximo é o perigo do DeepFake. Mas não precisa ficar contra a tecnologia o importante é utiliza-la da forma correta, como mencionado nos benefícios do Deepfake.
